  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Cam destroyed

As long as the renter is required to drill through their head first and then onto the Red it shouldn't be a problem.

I just don't understand what the hell you would drill into a camera for. What a freakin' moron. You don't drill into cameras. Period. You don't modify cameras. Period. There's no reason to do any of that. This isn't a car where you open up the hood and if you really know what you're doing you start tinkering with the engine or something. It just doesn't work that way. I can't believe anyone would be dumb enough to think that's a good idea. And if you rent something you should be a lot more careful with it than if you own it.

The thing that makes me most nervous about renting out something as glamorous and as beautiful and as expensive as the RED is the saying I've heard from a few people I've had on crew, "Don't be gentle it's a rental." That makes me cringe. No, morons, be gentle, it's a rental! I have my credit card on file and they have a hold on it for my insurance deductible, and since that deductible is $2,500 there's virtually no way my insurance will cover anything that's broken unless the truck holding the equipment explodes and destroys everything, i.e. my credit card will be billed for whatever you break. That would severely piss me off.

The story is true... BUT no drill. The person responsible supposedly used a socket wrench and threaded two inch long 3/8" wide bolts all the way into the body - through the heat sinks, fan, circuit boards, etc... The shoot was actually finished in a Wescam with the exact same (replaced/repaired) camera two weeks later.

So I have two questions:

What specifically was this grip trying to acheive?

What made him think he had a safe place to drill or bolt into?

(a third question, too: So he actually did make more than $100/day?)

modifying cameras.

modifying cameras.

We've got some PAL BVW400's here if you want some more of them - submerge them as far as you like ;)

This was back when a 400 was the sh*t. Can't give 'em away now.

An easy board repair only as long as you send it back to RED HQ - and with the minimal number of boards on cameras these days (along with their increased complexity) I'd say it wouldn't be a cheap exercise.

Yes you can fit out the Red with lots of rods and brackets, but sometimes there isn't the space for all of that gear on a rig and you have to modify. However the golden rule remains - never drill into anything without knowing what's on the other side.

I agree with you and I wasn't promoting willy-nilly modifications. I'm just saying that while most of us will treat our REDs like our baby ... in fact it isn't an actual baby - it's a tool that eventually may get modified for special purposes.

While I agree with the rest of your statement that renters shouldn't be making those mods and risking the camera - its abusive at this time where you can't easily replace a RED - I can't agree with your above statement.

Was this into the regular mount holes on the bottom? If so, while it was careless and I would like to think I would be savvy enough to stop before I broke through the bottom of the camera - it doesn't sound quite so idiotic. How thick is the area beneath the mount holes?
