Hi everybody,
I'm not naming any names, but I've heard from a couple sources that a Red Camera (####?) was destroyed during a shoot up here in the Bay Area.

Apparently, an operator was attempting to mount the Red to a radio-controlled helicopter, and in doing so drilled HOLES in the camera body. A circuit board was perforated, rendering this particular Red into a pricey paper weight.

Apparently these guys were asked to pack up and a complete cinema helicopter was brought in for the remainder of the shoot, using another of several Reds that were on hand.

With the array of mounting possibilites available for the Red, I am left dumbfounded as to why anyone would attempt a hack job on this camera.

Perhaps someone from the Red Team can tell us if a drilled-and-killed camera has come in for repair, and if so, was it possible?

Can this be for real? I can imagine how in a RC Heli application, every ounce of weight counts, so maybe they tried to get creative. What I can't imagine is an owner wanting to drill the Red chassis- ouch.

Drilled holes in the body! What was he going to do then? Tap some threads? Where did he think the chips were going to go?
I'm hereby giving up my "Bonehead of the Day" status to this individual.
Poor bastard.

Well it's a few months away from April so I can only guess this isn't a joke... Someone seriously drilled into a RedOne? Crazy!

Perhaps they were try to make the camera religous by making it holy (Sorry, crap joke).

it boggles the mind sometimes, just to be a fly on the wall when the braniac who came up with that idea hatched it....

I bet anything that it was done in the field with a hand drill and when the bit broke thru the wall of the body it just sucked itself right into that PC board.

And the winner of this year's Cinematography Darwin Award...

I remember a post from Jim awhile back, after some design improvement, saying that the camera was now bulletproof. Maybe someone took that just a bit too literally.

And This Is Exactly Why I Will Only Rent My Camera With Me Coming Along For The Ride..

Idiots

Sounds like Beavis and Butt-head at work...

I'm inclined to seriously not believe this. With all the mounting / rigging options for this camera, could anyone actually be that stupid? OK, before anyone answers that, I know there really are people who are that stupid out there, but come on. Really?

I'm calling BS on this.

This sounds like just a rumor to me. But if it DID actually happen, . . .
I hope those $100 a day grips were worth it!

If this rumor is true, there's one $100/day grip that just elevated his status to a $17,600/day grip. :)

"Umm. The Red camera is faulty."

"WTF! Let me see...oh no it's dead...wait...what's this hole?!"

"Dunno...just came back from the break and it wasn't working. Could be...termites?

"!"$£££%$%"£$^&$%&*!!!"

Regardless of "rate" or "job title" or "experience"... if anyone in the industry actually did this... my God. Just... well... (insert random explative)! I hope they never work again.

With the electronics packed into this camera, how could this have even been considered an option?

This is as logical as drilling holes into a Gold II system, but probably did considerably costlier damage...

Idiots.
