RED Bundles or Recommendations

[Mark Allen]

Is it realistic to assume that when RED releases they will have done some ground work to suggest viable/tested solutions for post workflows?

[Jeff Kilgroe]

I would think that's realistic in a sense. It's been mentioned that they will try and recommend various hardware and accessories for RED that they have tested. I'm also assuming that they will have various workflow scenarios mapped out so the early adopters can jump in and at least have some idea of how to go from shooting to edit to delivery. I want to see what the RED team's verdict is for a tripod system, mattebox, and follow focus. I'm also curious about workflow and what all REDCINE and the included software will do. But I think a lot of us will have to turn to these forums to gather information and opinions as well... For people like myself, at RED #1110, it's a matter of wait and see. For you lucky guys with #89 or other such fantastically low spots in line, we're looking for you to be the pioneers as far as various workflow methods, what accessories work best, etc..

For you lucky guys with #89...

What's funny is that I felt like this was such a high number when I got it. I phoned them to reserve the minute that reservations became available - but didn't get a call back until the evening after the day at NAB had ended. I was actually on set working, I'm glad I had a chance to take the call!

I guess there is a double edge to the early versions. There are definitely questions like... is there any sort of lemon policy? And... what happens if it stops working? Is there a swap-out plan? Anyone whose ever been on a set knows thing sometimes just stop working. With 35mm cameras usually the AC can fix it because they've trained for years with a camera - or an engineer comes - or another camera comes... what is the RED plan since no one will have had any experience? (fortunately fewer moving parts, but anyone who has worked in post knows that so often the problem is.... just a cable... just a single cable brings everything down, so electronics are not immune to trouble.)

It's all relative... like going to a popular movie on opening night to find that the line is already out the door and on the sidewalk. You get in line anyway, and after a bit discover that the line now goes on behind you around the building and across the way... now your spot doesn't seem so bad...

I didn't want to be in the "under 100" group... I'm actually pretty happy with my positioning... I figure all issues will be worked out by then through the efforts and testing of the pioneers, yet it's realistic to think I'll see the camera while there's a bit of summer left.
