  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED BTS - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Looks cool. Really happy for you guys. Stoked for 8K VV.

Saw the film last night and really had a fun time at the theatre. Everyone in the audience was so responsive and emotional. Impressive shot design and images all-around.
Still feel sorry for the NUKE artist who had to pull this key :laugh:

Oh Yes the Event at Red June 4th should be awesome,

saw the film last night and, WOW !!! just WOW. I loved the 1st one, and the 2nd didn't disappoint at all.
And, the humor, just friggin awesome !!!
And yes I got chills too knowing it was shot on Red 8k, .. ..
 
Saw it this afternoon and I've gotta say that I don't remember the last time an audience laughed so much.

Visually, it was shocking, beautiful, masterfully shot. Congrats to everyone who worked on the film and to RED.
 
Visually it was gorgeous however I felt it lacked some of the magic story wise from the first one. Baby Groot is awesome though
 
I believe all those VV sensor chips are now installed in the first group of Panavision's DXL camera.......
Does anyone know how many DXLs PV has at the moment?
 
loved the film, the VV look was amazing. I'm definitely gonna have to go see it again in Dolby Vision.


Whats the head they have on the steadicam and that they are holding during the running shots?

Congrats to RED. You jump started digital cinema. And in ten short years, made it mainstream while continuing to blaze the leading edge. You are my HEROES OF THE GALAXY.
 
Saw it twice last night in 4k on the worlds largest Imax screen.

Obviously it was not full height IMAX aspect ratio.

Noise level was in line with the clean aesthetic, it was quite hard to see any noise!
I felt there was occasionally a lack of light(ing) in shadows.
3/4 back and side lights on faces were occasionally a little too brutal for my taste.

The Opening aerial wideshot is the best looking landscape in respect of readable detail, that I've seen at IMAX from a digital motion picture camera.
(For research, I've seen over 50 IMAX screenings in the last 10 weeks)
However it was not full height 4:3 image where IMAX film is still superior in my view.
Fewer blatantly soft shots in GotG than other movies. However narrow DoF was over used and close ups of actors were occasionally unsatisfactory as they (naturally) moved within a very narrow field. Interior space ship lacked adequate DoF which I found was at odds with the 3d presentation.
For a given field of view and F stop, larger format sensors have less depth of field than smaller size sensors.
Using VV for interior wideshots may not be desirable if you are locked into low light levels.

After the two GotG screenings I watched the 16:9 Hindi movie Baahubali at IMAX. Shot on Alexa XT, projected 16:9 it was noisier, but given the subject, not obtrusive.
One really doesn't notice horsepower of raw detail except in big wideshots, which in a typical modern western movie are few and far between or are filled with CGI. However the Hindi movie featured many landscapes where the lack of core camera res was apparent.

On an IMAX screen, 4K projector res is barely good enough to hold a long duration wide shot with lots of detail in my view.

Didn't see any steadicam in those shots?
What you see is a gimbal called Stabileye which they used the camera on 80% of the film, rest on Techno/Oculus and few shots on handheld*.

There's more excellent information in the recent ASC mag on Gaurdians of the Galaxy vol2. What really impresses me is just how flexable the 8k is, and how that flows into problem solving:

" I equate it with some people preferring a blank sheet of paper and some liking ruled paper with lines to write on. As far as I'm concerned, you start with no rules. You ask, 'what's the idea?' and then you create some rules. I enjoy a blank sheet of paper."
