  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Bricks on Scarlet

For the RED solutions:

Or, you could do what I plan on doing, and just use the belt clip...maybe figure a way to just keep it close to the camera, it's a much cheaper option overall:

My question is, will only RED bricks work with either of these battery mounts, or can another brand of battery work with them? Just curious.

Just got in the Wooden Camera quick back and it's awesome! Very well built. The new version of the Switronix battery back they just came out with made it into my shipment and it has a bunch of mounting points so you can attach it to a rail mount etc. The advantage of the Wooden Camera system is that it uses a V-mount battery plate that passes on battery capacity info to the camera from Red Bricks and other V-lock batteries containing the appropriate circuitry for % readout on Red cameras. The Viewfactor plate cannot pass this information along, so you have to rely on the voltage readout. Wooden also makes a battery back plate that interfaces with the original Red battery plate so if you have a 2b-1b LEMO cable to use it with the Scarlet, you can mount that on the quick back and it will also pass along battery%.

It's also a modular system. While both VF and Wooden use the same sort of quick release off of the Redmote mounting point and suggest using M4 screws to tie it down for heavy loads, you can also get a cheese plate back for the WC quick back, and either swap that out for the battery plate if you're mounting the battery elsewhere, or get another one and just interchange them as needed.

Personally, I love the Wooden camera solution and Ryan is first class, but ViewFactor and Brook, Curt etc. do a great job too. I actually did some experimenting today with ViewFactor's Shuttle Mount and the QuickBack. I might use that mounting combo on the back of a handheld rig to help with balance. I also think you should go with a solution using a plate passing along battery percentage if you're using genuine Red Bricks. Otherwise you might as well go with another brand of v-lock battery, as the biggest advantage of Red Bricks is the percentage readout.

Not 100% what you asked for - but I though this might be something to consider at least...

I also prefer to use the RED BRICKs with both Epic and Scarlet (when I eventually get mine), but I like to keep the camera as light and as small as possible. So I have opted for the RED BATTERY BELT CLIP (http://www.red.com/store/power/product/battery-belt-clip-dsmc). I actually have the older one for RED ONE and just bought the B2->B1 conversion cable. Basically a same thing. The advantage of this setup is obviously the weight, as the heavy battery sits on your belt, while You can still clip the REDMOTE at the back of the brain... Also with the REDVOLT in the DSMC SIDE HANDLE you can hot-swap the belt battery with ease... When working of a tripod or dolly - I just attach the belt-clip accordingly. This really keeps the main camera compact and easy to pack without need of any re-assembly, etc...

Just something to consider...

EDIT: Another side benefit if this setup (that I have just tested in a real-world scenario) is that You can keep the battery in a worm insulated place when shooting in cold temperatures. I was shooting Mt. Fuji sunrise from 5AM at -13˚C (8˚F) and just kept the battery in a shoulder bar with insulating clothing inside. The whole setup worked flawlessly and the battery lasted for over 2.5 hrs!!!

I was planning on getting the VF solution, what exactly would I need for a similar configuration from Wooden Camera?

+1 if it works with other 3rd party brick, this should be a preferred for us with no budget people.

1) Wooden Camera Quick Back

2) Wooden Camera Battery Back (Switronix/IDX)

3) Switronix V-Mount Battery Plate with Epic/Scarlet LEMO

I don't know if the new version is standard yet but WC just designed a new version of the Battery back with a ton of mounting holes. I can post a photo tomorrow. If you order it from them now I think you should be fine if you put in a note asking for the new version.

Thanks.

I think it all comes down to who gets their stuff in stock first.

Sorry for the thread jack, but Is it possible to attach global media or other v mount batteries to the red belt clip?

Any V-mount battery will work on the RED BATTERY BELT CLIP...
Just not all will report the % status...
