Was disturbed, but not surprised to see Red cameras stolen. GPS/cellular/Wifi is very cool, but can be defeated using a simple electromagnetic shield (Faraday cage). Plus, it would be too tempting to take the law into your own hands if the authorities are slow to respond. As trick as the camera is, my life, even in it's unemployed state is worth more than $xx,xxx (at least to me and most of my family ;^).

The key is to make the camera worthless once it is out of an authorized users hands. Following RED's milspec motif, I think a thumb print scanner would be appropos (falls short of District 9's DNA scanners, but in the movie, the alien weapons were known to be an exercise in futility).

A swipe of the owner's thumb (or whatever digit(s) are "handy") enables the camera for a selected period of time: 24 hrs (rental) to x months (out of country shoot), you get the idea. More importantly, it becomes a known feature, so that even the techno crooks know it will be nothing more than a paperweight.

I guess a USB key or pinpad would be cheaper to implement, but doesn't have that "Red" factor.

Apologies to the R&D team for the scope creep.

If I was a thief...(I'm not but I'm just saying)...If i stole a RED...had it suddenly unusable...wouldn't I simply throw it away?

Consider this...Epic can hook up to the internet...as I guess the rest can...so that gives an IP address and location. RED can at any time then flag the camera and just call in the police? Better yet I'm down with a USB like key (though that could go missing) to switch the camera on...need the USB like car keys...eventually it would just be that you could be in the same range as the camera (like the new age cars)...
