Unpublished press release (i.e. found by poking around red.com with an FTP client). The file is called Red_ARRIvision_press_release.pdf. This is supposed to happen later this year:
There is also a document called ARRIvision_tear_sheet.pdf but I can’t open it. I think it’s password protected. Which is odd seeing as the press release wasn’t.
Hollywood, USA, June 15th, 2023.
Red and ARRI are proud to announce a bold strategic partnership to bring ARRI sensor technology to modern Red camera bodies. This brings the cinematographer the best of both worlds: high dynamic range, film-like colour, in a compact and scalable camera system.
While continuing to be competitors, Red and ARRI are now also strategic partners with one goal in mind: to realise the vision of directors and cinematographers worldwide. How? By utilising the size of Red cameras, the power of Red ASICs, and the industry standard sensor, the ALEV III, developed by ARRI.
“We loved the ARRI color science, but the cameras were just too big for some applications. Now, we don’t have to compromise,” said Darius Khondji, ASC, AFC, who shot films such as Midnight in Paris and Delicatessen.
“I’m really impressed,” said Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC. “I used to put up with the ungainly size of ARRI cameras, purely for the image quality. But, I don’t have to do that anymore. It's the best of both worlds, and there's no trade-off.” Deakins shot films such as Skyfall and Blade Runner 2049.
“It’s really about the story at the end of the day,” says Bradford Young, ASC, who is best known for features such as Arrival and Solo. “Resolution is just a technical thing. Geeks love it. But I want to tell a story. ARRI sensors let me do that. But with smaller, more configurable camera bodies, it’s just better than it has ever been.”
“Who needs 6K? 8K? Nobody. What I want to see is human emotion on that screen, lit as best as possible. That’s all that matters. It’s the story, dummy! ARRI sensors in compact Red camera bodies is just icing on the cake. I couldn’t lift the old Alexa, that thing was way too heavy. But with the Red bodies, you can put them in the palm of your hand. I don’t think I’ll be using anything else for a long, long time,” asserts director Danny Boyle, who gave us such classics as 28 Days Later and Trainspotting.
The exciting new cameras will be labelled Red ARRIvision, and available on sale from July 1st, 2023. All ARRIvision branded cameras will include 4K licenses. A 6K licence will be available next year.
