RED ARMOR

Not according to Jarred's post that opens this thread:

"- Can be purchased at time of purchase or any time during your original 1 year warranty."

Right... Would be good to hear someone from RED about this :) Thanks :)

There is a statement in the FAQ section on Red Armor. Things changed after the original post in this thread.

The policy was changed and you MUST buy RED Armor when paying for your camera balance and before shipment. I spoke with my rep about this.

I'm Stage 3 for EPIC X and when I pay the balance I have to buy the extended warranty at that time. But if you buy the camera you really should have the extended warranty.

To be without it would be crazy.

For those of us who took delivery of our cameras before RED Armor was available or before this policy change (which happened in a matter of hours from the RED Armor announcement), I believe we have through the end of the year to contact our bomb rep and get RED Armor ordered.

Best to contact your bomb squad person and figure it out.

They did change it for new orders....they changed it recently and didn't really make an announcement about it, but rather re-upped a thread.

Here is proof in the link http://www.red.com/store/scarlet/product/scarlet-x-w-al-canon-mount-side-ssd

read the info and you'll find: RED Armor is an extended 2-year warranty program for your Scarlet-X. RED Armor must be purchased before order processing begins. RED Armor warranty provides warranty coverage for a total of 3 years.

Well, I have to say I would love to be able to purchase the extended warranty following the initial policy, like I buy for my High end macs. The problem is the Epic is such a big investment in itself (including the essential gear to be able to shoot) that adding 2500+ money in the initial order hurts heavily in my already emptied pockets. I will have to find a way to get it, but it sure makes me compromise on my purchases following my budget...I would definitely buy Red Armor, just would love to be able to do it during my one year standard warranty...

Question, why not just use your insurance policy instead of Red Armor? I understand that when you file, there is a deductible. Mine is $750. But if my Red failed on me within 3 years and a part ended up costing $6000 or something like that, Insurance would cover it and I would be saving close to $2000. Just a thought. I don't really know what I'm going to do. I liked the original plan of being able to buy Red Armor anytime before the end of the 1 year warranty but now that the policy has changed and XMAS is right around the corner, I'm not so sure..

I'd have thought that In the interest of creating good will with customers, as well as making a lot more warranty sales, it would make sense to let customers buy the extended warranty closer to the time it's effective.
Some people won't be sure right now whether they'll be owning the camera after the intitial warranty period.
Others don't want to spend the cash now when they need accessories.
Why not let people spend money on accessoriess now, then take the money for extended warranty a bit later?

That does seem to work for Apple.

I'd bet many would be happy to pay slightly higher rate for Red Armor - maybe 10% - if they could buy it later in the initial warranty period.

I have to agree with this here. My insurance is pretty good and it covers equipment failure, not just damage and theft. So to that end, I guess I'm still undecided on the whole RED Armor thing. Especially on the EPIC-M. It already has a 2 year warranty on it and who knows what else I might be doing in 2 years. OTOH, I already had to send the M in for a repair. It was minor and RED turned it around quick. The REDMOTE docking plate on the back of the camera was getting loose.

I'm really undecided on this as well since we still don't know what Dragon is and whether or not I'll be replacing with a new camera instead of upgrading my Scarlet in a year or two.

I'm also a little annoyed that I can buy insurance for 3 years that lets me drop it down a cliff that costs less than RED fixing manufacturing defects. Doesn't seem like a great deal. I wish I could spend a year and get a feel for its reliability before deciding.

I think they should offer the same warranty RED Amour protection for Scarlet-X owners within the 1 year. Sounds funny not to. Should be able to purchase it within the first year much like Epic owners.

Originally you were able to. They changed it for all new camera orders. This isn't just the case for those buying Scarlets. I like the idea of it, but as soon as they changed it I was convinced I'd not only not beable to afford it but it wasn't really worth it when it forced me to look into insurance. I can see benefits both ways, ultimately Insurance fits my needs better.

Is this still the case? On the online store it now says one needs to buy the RED ARMOR before his order is processed...
If so, bummer, as I did not include the RED ARMOR with my camera, nor did I budget it into the initial purchase, figuring I would would make the money with the camera to pay for it within the first year easily...

Either way the original post should be updated (if necessary) to reflect the active status...

Thank You

Peter

I am leaning away from RED Armor because I feel I could spend that money on more useful "accessories" and as I see it a warranty is to cover defective parts which will HOPEFULLY show up in the first year of regular use....? Reasoning sound? or flawed?
Anyway I'm still debating it but cannot seem to find RED's warranty terms and conditions which I would like to check out before I make the decision. Anyone know where to find this?

This is the only part of my Red purchase that makes me somehow concerned. I still feel that Red would most definitely have more Red Armor orders if they kept their initial plan of one year time to buy the extended coverage. I'm going to buy Red Armor for my Epic, but because of that purchase I will have to skip the Red Rocket in my initial round of Red purchases. I think many new red users will have to skip purchasing many Red accessories and will search for workarounds through 3rd parties because of the heavy Red Armor hit when purchasing the camera.

The Red Armor is a must buy, no question about it, but making it a mandatory before shipping purchase will give a significant hit in the budget of newcomers.

In the short term this can bring more money to Red, but in the Medium to long term, the one year purchase time would bring more income and purchases. It's also a way to create a confidence relationship with the costumer, like Apple does with their "Applecare". All in all though, Red Armor is IMO an essential purchase for such a big investment. The "insurance" workaround is a way many are trying to find to avoid the initial hit. I'm sure many would go Red Armor if they could buy it later...

For us RED ARMOR makes absolute sense!!

I was too under the original impression that we had the first ONE YEAR time from original purchase date to get it,
but reading now that it is actually to be purchased before the end of 2011 for al cameras purchased before November 2011!!

So, unless RED extends an extension timeline, for those that did purchase their cameras before November 2011, if they didn't get a RED ARMOR, its game over, as they can't get it any longer.

Yep, at nearly $3k it's def a big hit for something you may need 2 years from now. Even if a repair was for example $5k for a damaged part that would have fallen under warranty 2 years from now I would probably rather wait.
Wonder what the most expensive repair for a failed part is likely to be... anyway I'm probably just looking for excuses to avoid getting Armor haha :)

No body knows repair costs until they get one basically. This sucks.

A list with ball park repair costs would be useful for every single reduser, and every potential red buyer.

Until then its "hey, buy our camera it'll work most of the time and if it doesn't, just pay an undisclosed repair cost to fix it at a later date.. oh, unless its just a beta firmware issue..etc"

Looks like third party insurance is a much cheaper/more flexible bet right now

Isn't it California law to disclose repair estimates? I used to work in consumer electronics a long time ago and we had to post a list of average repair costs for different things.
