I just purchased a Weapon 6k MG body with 180 hours logged.

2100 USD is a lot of money to have a year long warranty on the camera. My question is - is it worth it?

I'm getting insurance that'll cover theft, accident, ect... and I know RED designs their camera with the highest integrity

I'm not a big production company, I've just saved up to buy the Weapon to get my own productions rolling and rent it out sometimes. So I cannot just throw money on everything that is available, I need to plan my investments wisely.

I will get it inspected regardless for peace of mind, just wondering if the extra 2 grand is worth it.

Thanks!
Daniel

First of all, are you the worrying type? If so, get the extra warranty for peace of mind.

If you are not the worrying type, don't worry about it.

I know my response sounds cheeky, but it's my way of saying that only you can decide how much risk you are willing to take... but just know that most cameras with even that few hours on them would have identified any manufacturing weakness, IMO.

Is it like AppleCare where one can add it at any point within the original warranty period? If so I might hold off now, get some work/rentals and add the warranty in a few months when the sting of dropping multi-thousands on a new camera has worn off. :)

Nope, you have to order it at the time of ordering the brain. It comes with a one year warranty out of the box, so for red armor you're just buying an extra two years. I figure most of the actual issues should display themselves in the first year, and the warranty only covers manufacturing defects, not accidents which are more likely imo. The armor also doesn't transfer, so if you decide to upgrade in that timeframe it's not really worth it. I didn't sweat the red armor and instead just make sure you have good insurance.

Ordered it for my Scarlet MX and my Epic MX and both times never needed it. Didn't order it for my Dragon or Epic-W. As Elsie mentioned peace of mind is nice if you do worry. Otherwise, you get a year and that should be good enough to discover faulty parts.

Wil, Josiah, good points. E-W will be my first non-used/BT RED, so I really have no idea how warranty prone they are in that first year. From my experience with their cameras - which goes back to some of the earliest R1's - they're built like tanks.
