  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED, are you listening? The ROCKET is the bottleneck....

What if Red partnered with Blackmagic?

BM would figure out how to make a RedRocket 2 for $1500 and it'd come with Resolve for free :-D

Well, in defense of just moving the technical bar....why can't apple have just kept my G3 and made it fool proof for any HD files i work with now..? While this discussion has it's merrits and there are those not happy with having to buy a RR card to work with R3d's.....it's a bit like my point--why won't my G3 move big .move files around.....I think it's been well documented you don't need a RR card. But i hear nobody complaining why they have to upgrade their hardware to work with fast moving technology.....Jake mentioned he is or wants to buy an OLED monitor, but why isn't his current one upgradable? I think you are making a mountain of a mole hill. Ok, you don't want to get 1/2 or real time playback, then don't buy a rr card, but im sure you are soon or did upgrade your Edit Hardware. I think it's quite enough that we can say why we want a better rr card or solution...but seems like many are already developing like the new HP workstation and others. as far as i'm concerned i was grateful to have the RR card early on to work with R3d files...but many colleagues of mine did the same thing and just rendered files overnight...I don't get your frustation Jake.....don't buy one...do it how you've done it. Or do buy one and get better/faster performance. Red does not require you to buy one.....i'm pretty content that the bar has been pushed this far...

NOW, Version 2 please....cheaper, smaller, more robust & powerful to move 6k + files at full rez on two streams of video for 3d work--or something like that..... and those throwing up Alexa vs. R3d.....great. stay in that workflow....sounds like it is fantastic. I can't afford to work there because of initial break in costs....so your argument is poop!
Johhny.
I don't have a horse in this race. I don't really care one way or another. If you read my posts more carefully, you'll see, that I'm simply trying to show, that Red is making a mistake in not giving users what they want. It's very simple, users and by users, I mean, not just the Red camera owners, but everyone, that has to deal with Red generated material . They need to be asked a simple question:
What you'd like for Red to do to improve it's cameras acceptance in the market? I guarantee, that 6K resolution would be the last in that list. Simplicity would be number one. There is no need for scores of gammas and color spaces. Log and Lin are fine. There is no need for FLUT, when ISO is the same thing. There is no need for RR, when it was demonstrated years ago by Assimilate and Speedgrade, that GPU decompression/debayer is possible. So, to answer your question, I don't really care about RR, but I do care for Red company to prosper and to continue to be a shining example of American ingenuity.

I also really think the lack of a mobile RR or a prores module costs me (and alot of others) a lot of missed epic jobs.

I'm not really sure why people keep saying this. Yes, there is no ProRes module made by Red. So? The Sound Devices Pix240 is a thing that exists and you can pay money for, and it creates ProRes files from an Epic/Scarlet using the same naming convention as the Red. Instant ProRes transcodes. No rocket needed.

+1 (lol)

What about overcranking? Still needs transcoding right? A dedicated module might be able to record the higher frame rates.

You could record RLF, issue is that you cannot (afaik) yet have different luts on LCD/SDI...

With the new preset capabilities I suppose you could map a button to apply a look preset with each gamma so that when you are lighting and previewing the image you can view in red gamma and before you roll you can press the button and switch to redlogfilm. Not ideal but a bit of a workaround.

Red already partnered with BlackMagic by offering the SDK. I don't really see what more red could do, the only real enticing reason for BlackMAgic to make a a debayering card would be if that card de-bayered and accelerated Red Files, BlackMagic's own DMG, ArriRaw, Sony F65 Raw, SI2k, Cineraw, etc. all at $1500 bucks.

Its a myth that Red is the only company with a tedious raw workflow, try working with f23, f35, f65, S12k, Arriraw, 16bit tiffs, etc.

lets be realistic asking for a new Rocket faster Rocket card, will not solve raw workflow issues. Raw workflows are usually reserved for higher end productions. It so happens that thanks to RedRockets, Adobe, and a few other companies most of us were able to do this work in our bedrooms.
Now Moores law is giving us 6k. The anxiety over working with 6k 15 stop files is way too exciting.

I am not alone in saying that after 5 years of working with Red files, the resolution is so sharp that working with 1/2 debayers has been akin to working with 1k D5 film transfers. Even on a big screen you can only tell the difference if you have both a full debayer and a half debayer side by side. Many of you on here are pixel peepers and ignore the real world realities.

That said the two most important requests are a 4k-prores 4444 12 bit module (not a sound devices pixy thing) and a new red rocket card.

I am well aware that it will take sometime for these two products to be released. A lot goes into making these products and Red being a small company must weigh its priorities.

I say priority number one 6k 15 stops Red Dragon.
Priority number two on board realtime debayer module
Priority number three a new Redrocket card
priority number four a new audio recording module for the scarlet-X

everything else red produces will be a cool non essential surprise.

This would solve my little world...
