  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Not on the island, but this Industrial area that has a great view of the city. It borders a narrow channel between the mainland and the island.

Yeah...talk about perpetuating the myth that it is always cold in Canada...damn!

It wasn't that cold - only around 1C (34F) but it's always windy in that spot. The good news is that in 3 months Toronto will be 35C (95F) with 100% humidity. We get the best of both worlds!

The ghetto tape job is because we were testing a 5.6x5.6 mattebox and had borrowed 6x6 Pancros to test. I was also working quickly because we were trying to catch a very small patch of sun for the test. I'm sure some of the more pompous Redusers will disagree, but you do what you gotta do. (PS: I was also puling focus from the monitor) ;-)
 
No way will I argue, Crewpix. Tape is your BEST friend... along with velcro and blackwrap. But you're a pro so you know that!
Dylan, I would say that for the test to really be effective you would need a sunny summer day near sunset to get the IR contamination... the day you guys were out there would have worked better for a UV test! :)
It would be great if someone had Panchros, the 486, the new Tiffen jobs all in the same place so we could see a COMPARATIVE test. Dunno if that is likely to happen soon though.

I hear ya! I am banking on the Panchros. When I get my camera (maybe next week?) and my filters (maybe two weeks) I will have more flexibilty to test. Maybe I can track down a stills version of the 486.

Are you saying that you get 93% IR block using the 1.2 or that all 4 filters together equals a total of 93% IR block - which it sounds like it will not work for us - stacking 2 of your ND's that is.

For example: Say I have your Pancro .9 ND and I put a Schneider .6 ND and a Polarizer behind it in my matte box. Will that work and with your filter in front block enough IR to clean up the images? Because if we cannot stack your Pancro's but need more ND this is the only way to reduce the light enough on a bright day is it not? At least at the moment?

Can you make 1.8 and 2.1 versions of your ND filters?

Hey Dylan,

That's a monster of an IR sink that you have there :cold: It would be very difficult in such environment for IR to show up. With the weather like this, you'd better stay home next to your fire place....and shoot that instead! Or, visit sunny Australia :nuke:

I look forward to your results. I am also thinking that Pancro NDs should "in theory" perform well.

Hi Pawel

Crewpix and I will be in your neighbourhood in May. Shooting "somewhere" in Australia. Can we count on you if we are in need of RED suport? We are taking two cameras, but one can never be too safe!

Looking forward to the IR rays hitting my skin!

May is winter time Downunder :usd: so you may get more UV :matrix: than IR at this time. I hope my Red will arrive early May :sorcerer: and if so, of course I will be here to assist any way I can.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but Heliopan does make a filter specifically designed to block IR (and some UV) frequencies that digital sensors fall victim to. The Leica Digital M8s had a similar problem upon their first release and Heliopan was called in to remedy the situation, or so I've been told.

As far as I know, they're only offered for still cameras, but I'm sure someone could convince them that there is a market in the Red customer base.

has there been any further move on this? - I have tested a hot mirror with a 0 degree IR blocking ability (to 1000nm or so) and found Zero difference on the IR contamination. On sunny day exteriors getting a magenta cast on anything with an ND which is difficult to remove (more concerned about sharpness though).

Any new developments? - do the panchros work 100 percent?
 
Tom at Pancro told me they were doing final tests with a RED this week. Keeping my fingers crossed.

JTM you need to block about 700nm and higher to see the visual difference.
 
I've been following this thread for quite some time and have spoken to a local RED owner who's experienced the issue.

But every time I see these movie set shots of people shooting exteriors they do not seem to be using anything but ND filters if anything at all... Do they no something that we don't... Are they ignoring it and walking into post with magenta hue images? Are there instances of shooting exteriors where IR isn't an issue?

Does the potential IR hot mirror fix always have the furthest most filter looking like a mirror?

Forgive me if I'm overlooking something obvious here...
