I read this on the new york times website today:

Complaint: No support for RED digital cameras. The RED camera is a favorite of filmmakers; it records incredibly high-resolution video directly to a hard drive. But FCP X can’t import its files.

Answer: Apple is working with RED to create a plug-in that will give native RED support to FCP X. In the meantime, you can set your RED camera to shoot and capture video in the QuickTime format, which FCP X imports just fine. Or you can use RED’s free conversion program, which converts its own files into the Apple ProRes format, which FCP X loves because it’s so much faster and easier to edit than the native RED files.

Can somebody from RED confirm this is true? It would be nice to know...

Here's a link to the complete article:

Speaking of inaccurate, it's definitely not true that you can "set your RED camera to... capture video in the QuickTime format" unless the author has a very liberal view of the utility of QT reference files.

It makes it sound like how much this person who wrote the note understand the RED. It's sad.

There's a little update on the blog.

UPDATE: The information here comes from consultation with Final Cut Pro X's product managers at Apple.]

Maybe there's some miscommunication or misunderstanding, but if not, considering this is semi-official PR communication, this kind of misinformation and FUD is unethical, if not illegal.

It's painfully obvious how little David Pogue knows about the subject matter he's writing on. Reading through his responses to comments on the board he's just some guy who was given random information about a profession and piece of software he knows nothing about and he tried to put it together in a way that made sense to him. He thinks RED can record quicktimes directly on camera, he quotes the upgrade price of $200 dollars for automatic duck because "I would imagine that most people who have to do this sort of thing already own the older version...". Why would I pay $500 dollars for something my NLE does natively!?

He also writes:
"I don't get why pro editors are "ditching" Final Cut. If they were happy with the old Final Cut, why are they ditching it now? I mean, if there WERE no Final Cut Pro X, they'd still be happy, right? So why
not just pretend there isn't a new version?
Doesn't really make sense. (And it's also not that believable--from the pros' comments here, it's very clear that disruptions to their workflow is a HUGE BIG DEAL. They're not going to junk their main
editing app overnight.)"

We weren't really "happy" with the old Final Cut, we were making do because we honestly believed that Apple was working hard to implement missing features that have been slowing us down for years. This was just the final nail in the coffin.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I would take whatever this guy says about anything related to Final Cut or our profession with a grain of salt because he has absolutely no idea what he's talking about.

I love how he talks about how prores is great because it's so much faster and easier to work with than native red files. You know, unless your NLE has native red support like Media Composer and Premiere. He has no comprehension of the word workflow.

When I read this, I knew I had to be sceptical about the other statements made in the article, that's the reason I wanted to verify this. It has now become clear that Apple is not currently working with RED on a FCP X plugin and from reading between the lines of all posts and tweets of RED related people I understand that they are not too happy about this.

I guess this thread can be closed...
