Hey Guys,

The only reason many projects go back to redcine after a finalcut in FCP using prores is because of the half-debayer... Am I right?

I was playing around with Red Alert and it looked like it can create a full-debayer prores file with minimum fuss. If we do this, we edit through FCP and then use COLOR to grade and thats it. We are done. No need to do Crimson and all.

The one drawback and a major one at that is, Red Alert will only take one file at a time. So this might work for smaller projects and save time in the back end.

Does RED have plans to support multiple file imports on Red Alert?

We've written a custom python tool that takes an fcp xml file, pulls the referenced .R3D files in the metadata and writes a new fcp xml file linked to the new 2k files.

This is then graded in Color. Of course, this expects you to have properly exposed footage...

The much bigger drawbacks are the amount of time it takes to render all of your footage at final quality, and the loss of color correction flexibility when you convert to a "baked in", compressed HD format.

Sounds a lot like The Crimson Workflow app made by Ian Bloom, which is quite fantastically good.

Yeah, it's similar, except just a command line version currently. But it does the job and appears to work flawlessly - even with multiple video tracks... Of course, what we all need is the SDK - then it would be possible to create an app that would allow you to do simple grading to the pull list - I think Ian has ideas along the same lines.

One thing that would also be helpful is a way of getting access to the grade you can store in the R3D files. Once again, waiting for the SDK...

It takes SO long to render any significant amount of footage through RED ALERT, I've ended up editing QT proxies, then rendering only the footage in the final out of RED alert. I just name them the same thing, and relink the media. (yep it's tedious, but currently I'm only working with a 5 minute final piece). The rendering from RED Alert is what's taking the time!

Hmm... it's pretty fast on an 8-core...
