  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED 3D Photo thread.

If it's possible to get good quality stereo squeezed onto a single chip like that - it seems like a great business opportunity for someone to produce high-quality optical rigs. It bypasses the need for the second camera and a mirror rig so it could cost a decent amount and still be cheaper than a 2 camera setup. With a 5k chip you'd get pretty decent HD stereo.

I was thinking the same about the new 5K cameras...

Yes it's possible and I have worked on other similar projects wth the RED. All of our "proof of concept" prototype's produced workable results. It does of course create more post work. Since you have to slice each frame to get your L&R and correct some distortion issues. The pablo makes this a snap. Fortunate for us we happened to have one in the next room over.

Unfortunately, money is required to move any of these concepts and prototypes forward. If your interested in exploring these ideas further contact me and we'll talk more.

Meanwhile, beamsplitters are were it's at.

Of course it takes a bit more work in post. Although it seems like it would be slightly less hassle on-set.

A side-by-side split (as opposed to top/bottom) also guarantees the rolling shutter is identical on both eyes, which is a nice bonus.

Unfortunately I'm not in the position to fund the development of a production-model...
 
Rolling shutter the same, color the same since it's same sensor and same lens, never have to worry about camera settings, file management, less gear to rent, less data to stor (initially anyway) also we had a design for the phantom with a variable inter-ocular, also a macro phantom 3D setup for doing insects etc..... all cool stuff. Maybe some day some of it will see the light of day so to speak....

people have been inventing stereo gadgets for over a century! Very few of them get taken to the next level. With the current interest in the market you never know...

I have no doubt that RED could make a great single-camera stereo lens. Heck, if anyone could I bet it's RED. But I think they have other priorities for the time being.

Still systems like these (above) have obvious limitations and problems. I know since I have had some expirience in these "waters".

but they would Fulfill special shots during a production. Right now If you have to pick one camera "system" to shoot a story you still looking at a beamsplitter of some kind.

I hope people will continue to experiment, since that is the nature of stereoscopic 3D imaging technologies and advancements.

I have some ideas..... = )
