Red 3D Feature

I have a 3D Feature coming up in the next few weeks on the new Element Technica 3D rig #1 ( which is awesome). Since this will be my first 3D picture I'm defining a protocol to do each morning before we shoot.

My biggest concern is the mount and As we all know the PL mount has a tendency to drift when on long-lenses ( Optimo 12:1) and during big temperature changes. I'm more concerned with checking the collimation each morning. What has other Stereoscopic shows been doing? Has it been a big issue?

I would appreciate any input on shooting 3D on Red specifically. I've been very well taken care of at Keslow Camera and by ET.

Something like the Denz FDC will greatly speed up collimation checks.

I don't know if heat drift would be an issue but logically if it is then I don't think it would be a good idea to calibrate your back focus to the coldest part of the day. Surely if it was an issue you'd want the camera warmed up first?

I personally like the Denz FDC alot but every rental house I've talked to won't allow theirs to go on a "rental". $5K is alittle much to ask production to purchase.

Myself and our 1st AC Gunnar Mortensen will allow the camera ample time (30min) to warm up before we start. It takes us an hour just to calibrate the cameras, lenses, and ET rig each morning anyways.

We have a order of operations each day and checking the collimation is one of the first task we do. I'm curious what others shooting 3D on Red are doing as this will be my first 3D Feature and my 10th Red Feature.
