  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red 23 Landscape

I am curious why you say the 180mm lens should not loose resolution at such a small aperture. As far as I know, all experimental data indicate that maximum resolution is achieved on real lenses around f/5.6 to f/11. This has been measured with lenses at focal lengths ranging from 12 mm to 400 mm.

Dear Rocketeer and Astro.

I want to say I really appreciate the images you posted. I'd be interested to see more.

But I also think it's encouraging and good, that this community quickly spotted flaws in the images. I hope you can take that constructively and post more images. I've learned something just from this discussion. This camera pushes you much harder to make a sharp image. I THINK THIS IS REALLY GOOD NEWS BECAUSE THE SENSOR ITSELF ISN'T LETTING YOU FUDGE IT.

It's also encouraging that Graeme is looking into this blue channel weirdness.

I'm impressed by this histogram:

despite that little notch on the far left.

But I'm curious about this:

I'm assuming these are compression artifacts. It looks like some very detailed areas of underbrush that get filtered down. I guess that's to be expected from 10:1 compression but I'm just wondering how these look in motion. (The right side is the green channel with a little bit of sharpening.)

PS. If anyone can tell me how to make my images come up as thumbnails on this forum, I'd really appreciate it.

Yup, we're in constant evaluation on compression. Just figuring on the best way to deal with it.

wide shots full of foliage is one of the worst-case scenarios for compression, of course since there's detail everywhere.

Understood. And I'll note that the same artifacts in a discrete cosine transform world would be gross. These are warm an fuzzy.

Graeme what are your thoughts on the overall sharpness of these images? Is this a lense thing or an image pipeline thing?

We and you should have the opportunity to find out that this week..:shifty:

Rocketeer are you sending me a ticket to New Zealand. Bitchin'. All I ask is that I don't have to fly out of Newark!

Just a moment. Shouldn't the RED codec be "visually lossless"? Or is this aim still to be achieved. I am really a little confused here.

As mentioned above, there are some issues we're looking into as best as we can.

No point in being any other way. We can't, obviously, speak to the precise details of what we're doing with the compression, but we are aware of the issues and are working on it right now.

Maybe different modes as far as the compression handling concerns, it could be a viable method to deal with. What do you think Graeme? Is it possible? Is it desirable? Moreover, is it the best way to go?

I think it's best to go with a mode that's "best" all-round. More complexity in user choice is not always a good thing as you can just bet people will use the "wrong" setting.

I'm afraid you're right. You have our unconditional confidence, Graeme.

I've just asked 'cause I have some concern that some focus on a sharpness paramount may compromise a cinematic outcome ala Milkgirls footage.

Hi,
Has anyone used rawport without compression. Is it any better?
Thanks,
babu

The compression on those scotish pictures remind me of one of the still from CTL.
The one with thairplane on land an a couple guys around it.
