Andrew Stoud DOP Comments:

These tests were prompted by the post guys who were looking for nice big wide shots with lots of detail and saturated colour. The sun was quite high in the sky and it was very unflattering light.

The camera was set at 320 ASA and exposure evalution was made taking meter readings off my pentax spotmeter set at 500 ASA.

Zeiss standards were the lenses.

It was my intention to base my exposures entirely off my meter readings and I treated it like a reversal or BW stock. I gave it a bit more for the highlights.

The wide/long shots were shot on 20mm and 180mm at around T-22 with a Pola. The base stop was around T-45 to T-90. I didn't have any more ND handy. In my experience these lenses don't resolve quite as well at deep stops. You might get more depth of field but the trade off is in lost resolving power.

The ability of any lens to resolve detail is dependent on many variables, its also a subjective and relative thing

Andrew.

These are wonderful stills, thank you very much! (would love to see the thumbnail landscape large; the full-sized Red23_landscape.tiff is a different shot). Can you tell us what lens was used, and what f-stop?

They were right NZ is too bright. What lens was used for these?

Apologies, a bit of confusion between naming and swapping between computers at home and work. It will take about an hour to get the thumbnailed landscape shot up and I'll update the thumbnails.

The shots were taken by Andrew Stroud who has been our main test DP using his personal set of Zeiss Standards. I don't have the shot details at hand.

Geek alert: For the extreme pixel-peeping, 500% magnification type folks, I notice some interesting things on the landscape TIFF file. For example, just looking at the blue channel in Photoshop, the histogram is almost entirely within the 50...196 range, yet there are several areas where the blue value goes abruptly to 0 in areas where I am pretty sure it should not be zero. In the color view, those areas are the brightest grass-green regions, so it seems the color has been exaggerated and clipped the blue channel.

Rocketeer, thanks a lot for posting these stills.
Analysing them in PS (100%) I find them very soft compared to nature stills of my Nikon D200 (all in-camera sharpening switched off). Is it just me who has this impression?

Would be very useful to compare to similar shots using the new RED 18-50.

I agree

Thanks for posting, but, the images look bad to my eye, way to noisy, videoy, bad.. what gives?

Yeah... there's sth strange going on there. The blue channel goes black in the place where the green one clips.

Maybe it has something to do with highlight pprotection?

And it IS very soft. I guess the painted efefct has to do with wavelet compression.

Tough crowd. Don't worry I'm here all week. Have you tried the shrimp?:turned:

We've had a Zeiss STD and Red Zoom on a lightbox and collimator and they are resolving the same resolution(or close enough)

Andrew was using the Panasonic BT-LH900 which I know in our first tests the crew struggled with in daylight even with a hoodman (our RED LCD wasn't working) That may explain the softness.

I'd be interested hearing from Graeme or Rob because I think it may be the compression dealing with the scenes that is the effect.

I'll check with our Post people on Monday and get their call.

Hey Rocketeer,

Is the following frame belonging to the same footage?

I didn't get this from Reduser or red.com and i am not sure who actually shot this but it has a similar softness to the ones you posted....

A lens issue maybe?
