Since RED 2/3 Complete Kit is going to be available only in 2010, besides renting what would be the best alternative if someone needs to buy.

I am setting up a home studio so it would have been great to have this but wondering what else would be good.

I am thinking Panasonic HVX 200 but I don't want to spend more on the 35mm adapter. Is there anything else that would give a similar quality around the same budget.

Please advice.

I guess these are the options with their release dates. HVX200 seems to be the only one for $3,000 in ebay. Other two are around $4,000.

I was hoping to go to India withe 2/3 scarlet and make a pilot for a TV Series
(http://thebigboyz.info) but now I got to find an alternative. Renting in India is expensive.

Even if I postpone to 2010, there would be a shortage of scarlet supply due to the growing popularity of it. Having never owned a RED, I am also concerned about the reliability.

Is there any recommendation as to what would be a reasonable camera for around $3k that can make a flashy pilot just like the website. Please let me know if there is any website that compares these cameras.

Thanks!

Erm; I didn't see a single solitary video clip at that website; just a bunch of well-known copyrighted images used without credit or apparent permission. You don't need a camera, you need a Google Images search (and a damn good lawyer).

The panasonic is build rock solid but the picture isn't all that.
The EX1/EX3 has a nice clear picture and better low light performance, but it's more expensive and a bit plastic-like IMHO.

The EX3 is also killer with a relay lens and a 35mm adaptor.

It might be a bit hard to get the Scarlet 2/3's picture with only $3k.

You wont find anything close to a Scarlet's image (even though we don't exactly know what that is yet) but still, Nothing even comes close to the proposed image for the price point of the 2/3rds Scarlet.

Sorry, but for 3K, the best your gonna get is a 5DM2/7D at BEST.

There's nothing comparable to the Scarlett for the price. That's what makes it so great, and why you want one.

But other than that, any of those other cameras are quite capable of producing excellent images in the right conditions, when properly utilized. Same story with the Scarlet. It won't make eye-popping images just by turning it on. All the good stuff you've seen is done with excellent lighting, lenses, etc.

There is no any alternative for Scarlet for filmmaking. If you are going to shoot documentary or clip you can use 5D or 7D or Gh1 but when we are talking about cinema we have only one way - wait for the Scarlet that is why all of us every day get into this site with hope to see release date at last. And thousands of our projects are waiting for this news too.

Probably get the 7D for now. We have yet to see any detailed tests regarding aliasing, though, so you might want to hold off until then. You will not have any ability to overcrank, and only limited color correction, but the images should be okay, and you will not need a 35mm adapter.
