The problems with the breathing, focus play and zoom mentioned here actually make it sound more comparable with a still lens.

Personally, I love the smoothness of the prime lens rack focus. Zoom's breathing gives a completely different feel. It's jarring. Does your shot require a smooth rack focus or one that needs to call attention to itself? Both are valid options. I would think you choose the lens that is appropriate for the shot.

I have to say, the breathing on the Red lens is about what I would expect. I still would like to get my hands one one and shoot with it for a day before buying it. But not sure that is feasible at this point.
