One friend asked me a question tonight... He's looking for an extreme high quality cine zoom lens to shoot his short movie with a 5D MKII.
So... after a few minutes I was wondering if a RED 17-50 would work just brilliant...
With these new PL mounts for 7D/5D, does anybody think this could be a great idea?

One step forward, two steps back. But seriously, why stop there? Why not use a Master Prime on a 5D?

Elite?

Elite?

I understand that you consider yourself the elite of this industry since you own a 4K camera and all and don't want to lower yourself to the level of Rodney Charters, Shane Hulburt or Gale Tattersall but try to level with the poor Bast@#$@ that don't own one and answer the question for once::sarcasm:
I think that 17-50 RPZ is a S35/APSC format lens so it will vignette on FF 5D2- at least at the wide end.

I'd love to see it on the 7D though! or even the 1D mkIV. And I plan on trying it when I get the 17-50 which I just ordered today. woot! I think it will be awesome on the 7D. Alas the 5D is full frame. :/

mods to fit

mods to fit

On unmodified 7D/1D4 you'll need to modify the lens mount to fit adapters. No big deal- it just needs to be done. below is my version of the PL2EOS adapter with integrated handle and support- as a strain relief for the camera mount.

Firstly, I do not have a bad attitude; I love my Red and will Stage 3 to Epic as soon as available.

That out of the way, what's the sense of equipping a 7D with a PL mount, decent LCD, EVF, and other accessories rather than paying less than five grand for an AF100 which is a motion picture camera and not a kludge with so many operational and image drawbacks?

I guess if you really love the character of the 7D image it could be worth it. Are there any other reasons?

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Hi Patrick, cine lenses are made for motion, still lenses made for stills.
In motion you will frequently need to pull focus during a shot, a cinema lens is made with this task in mind, and most still lenses will give any focus puller a very very hard time trying to keep up.

Before this thread is closed I'm going to attempt to answer your question:
4/3" format is obscure and requires fl AOV conversions- not cool for film set trying to explain to the production why lenses look different.
Yes the peripherals are there but not quite in right places- The VF way back makes it impossible to operate shoulder mounted for example. The LCD won't work for that either- it's too close. The lcd would probably work flipped outwards for the focus puller but not quite- I'm not sure if it has enough resolution and it's also too far back IMO. The lens mount is flimsy at the camera and no adapter without a positive lock at the camera side will fix it.
Image shift from that for sure- just like pressure based Nikon mounts on Redone.
But you already know all that- I'm just stating the obvious....

Boy are you sadly mistaken! I do not and would never consider myself thusly! I just find it silly to add such a lens to that kind of camera when a similar Canon lens would do just fine, but that's my opinion.

Forgive me...

Forgive me...

If I misunderstood- my apologies.
There are many reasons why you would want to use the same lenses on multiple cameras and I'm sure you're aware of them. The reality today is that these cameras have their place and have been embraced by the community- the price, form factor being key strengths. I just tried to keep it to the point that's all..:aureola:

We're good, no issues here.

If you are looking for a good zoom then shoot a 7D not a 5D mk2.

Then you can use the RED 17-50... if you convert the camera to PL mount.

Another option which works BEAUTIFULLY is to use the Zeiss 15.5-45 LWZ.2 with a Canon EOS mount.

I just tried that particular lens today at a trade show. Oh my.

The particular lens I tried was in brand new condition, so it was actually much nicer than the PL mount LWZ's I've used before.

As a DSLR zoom lens solution for motion work that lens has my heart right now.

As to those wondering about why one might choose to use cine lenses versus still lenses... I get a little weary of explaining. I guess that's why they inverted these hyperlink things.

So... suffice it to say that there is a real practical difference between cine lenses and still lenses- even the the glass elements in the lenses are identical, as they are in the Zeiss DSLR lenses and the Zeiss Compact Prime lenses.

Thanks to all of you ! I appreciate. So I'll tell my friend about the crop on 5D, and if he really wants the RPZ, then he'll have to go 7D.
I had also thought about the Zeiss LWZ2, but you cannot find it yet for rent in belgium. My first idea was the rpz 'cause one can rent it easily in my area.
I'll try to talk about the leica r too.
So thanks again everybody.

Forget 5DMK2 with cine PL lenses.

Also forget AF100 just because it's a bulky box old-fashioned video camera.

GH2 to PL mount is only way to go.

Excellent image quality, many awesome stills and video features also great DSLR like ergonomics

for just 1000 bucks and overall much better than AF100

(also don't trust AF100 gurus just because they have to live from something, did you get it???!!!).

GH1-HotRod.jpg

Hot-Rod PL mount is available also for GH2.

I use a RPZ 17-50 on my red and it cut's pretty good with canon L 24-70 on my 5D.
Both the 17-50 and the 24-70 are fantastic lenses, but to use on a 5D, you need a lens that cover full frame that the 24-70 do.

convert the lens not the cam

Then you can use the RED 17-50... if you convert the camera to PL mount.
You don't need to chop the 7D- modify the 17-50 lens mount so it works on both 7D with adapter and normal PL. Swapping mounts on lenses is not something you want to do yourself- especially wide zooms- they are very sensitive to back focus setting.

@ Sanjin:
You're right, I tried the GH2 @ Photokina and the full video settings through touchscreen... well that was really cool ! But if I'm not wrong my friend also wanted to shoot on the 5dmkII cause it has a bitrate of 40-45mbps while something like the panasonic's under 24. Anyway that could be very interresting to try.

@ Jacek: I've found something interresting here: http://kcwtechnica.com/
A Pl mount to canon eos. Do you know this and do you think it's could be good?
Thanks
Franck
