Maybe this will be helpfull.

I have noticed my new 16GB cards really only let me access them when
connected to my old Dell XP system.

I use a sony CF card reader that has been flawless with my 8GB and 16GB cards on my xp system.

But last week I tried it on a host of different mac systems and some pcs and could not get the 16GB cards to read (on some the card could be seen thru utilities tools but thats all, no mounting).

Today I am on my friends brand new Imac with the most current osX, same thing; 8GB no problem, but 16GB no way (turned off, switched cables etc, etc.).

What I did notice is this... the systems sees the 8GB as a "file system" (MS-DOS (FAT32)) and for the 16GB... it DOESN'T even see a file system, only a "Partition Type" (Windows_FAT_32). This I found interesting... "MS-Dos" for the 8GB card, "Windows" for the 16GB. Maybe nothing, maybe something.

I have attached screenshots of the pop-up windows.

Maybe a firmware update on the 16GB could help the problems people are having (MS-DOS as opposed to Windows, if we choose).

I just don't have the $500 for the RED CF reader (need base, that's were I get the $500 I assume) in the near future, some slight unemployment economic problems.

The sony reader is probably your first point of error. There is nothing normal about those super speedy 16GB Red cards, they dont even work in my still cameras.

Again they work fine on my XP system. So the reader is not so much the issue.

I am trying to drill down to what is going on.

The mac 3 (3 different versions of computers, 3 different OSX vers. from tiger to snow leopard) all work fine with 8GB. Even a windows vista Compaq system works fine with the 8GB. But throw a 16GB in the mix, no dice, non work.

So I will state again, XP DEll Precision 530 (2002-3) works fine with both 8GB and 16GB.

And yes I have formatted the 16GB by camera.

Side note: the vista system did pull it up for a bit, and I copied half the data but flaky, the 8GB... flawless.

So I am only saying, that maybe the problem is not the necesariley the speed of the 16GB, but the way it is being treated when formatted (by the RED ONE camera).

I am just simply curious as to why XP has something that sees the 16GB fine thru the Sony CF reader, but other systems can't. Remember they all see the 8GB fine with the sony reader.

My gut is, this isn't a speed issue (cause it should screw up on the old XP system), but a format issue that maybe could be fixed by a firmware update.
Please look at the pics I posted before you make comments, these do have significance I believe, because they show how these cards are being seen by the operating system, nothing to do about speed here.

I can always buy a Lexar, no problem, but people have had problems with those to (with the 16GB).

And yes I know the 16GB run fast (I just read a bunch of post BEFORE I posted). Just relating information that I thought my be incitefull.

It could be the usb port not providing enough power to the reader.
