  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED #127 MX High ISO Tests

I still cant quite believe that you can get acceptable images at 3200ISO. Pretty outrageous. Thanks for sharing.

It is pretty amazing that you can get this quality of images at 3200 ISO. I'm sure with some noise reduction you can get some really cool shots at 6400 ISO.

Thanks guys for a great Q'n'D comparative test between R1-M-X and 7D.

7D can be nice B or C camera in shooting with R1 as it was shown here at some of recent productions.

Not forget to mention that 7D can become an excellent as a director's viewfinder when you convert to PL mount.

Also I would suggest that your hands get ASAP on the combo RedRocket + Wave + REDCine-X

to get exactly right or under your "fingers-knob-feel" control over FLUT™™™™™, also Shadow and Contrast.

Then you can forget to work with ISO that is more "harsh" sort of exposure index (EI) control of your footage in post.

This is really a unique feature that you get only working with R1 R3D files and the future Red cameras like Epic and Scarlet.

Also forget 7D, 5D, 1DMK4, F35, Genesis, Alexa or any other "corporate pro" kind of competitor camera.

You don't get it there even close to this easy to "tweak" a look of your footage on set and in post.

One more note:

The Canon 7d footage is one or one and a half stop brighter than the Red MX footage, while both sequences were equally exposed. I find it interesting because it shows that ISO is not what is meant to be: a standard that applies to all photographic devices in the same way.

Is the Canon underrated or the Red overrated?

Richard, did you check exposure with a lightmeter?

In build 21 and before, Red's false color behavior indicates that between Red's metadata ISO and lightmeter ISO is about 1 stop difference giving the old Red sensor a "native" sensitivity of approximately 160-200 ASA.

Now seeing that a competitor delivers brighter pictures with the same exposure I wonder what the news sensor's "native" sensitivity really is.

These thought do not make the MX performance lesser, of course.

Hans

I was hoping for less skew. Do you guys think it could improve more through firmware updates as it happened with the RED1?

The 7D looks brighter but it also looks as if it has a burned-in 'look' that tries to make things more pleasant to the eye. The RED footage is more natural and i prefer it.

Great tests Andrew, We are expecting our camera back soon. cant wait.

Hey one question, non RED related, How do you get these big images onto the red forum like you have, I can only put up silly little 130k jpgs. is there a trick to it. I have lots to share but cant seem to get the big image thing going.

Well, are you hosting it from another site. I have those pictures hosted from my site and that's why I can have them so big. Hope that was the question you were asking.

Andrew, these shots look amazing.. can't wait to see more some LA shots.

Hope you don't mind Andrew, I took your footage and ran it into color for about 10-15 mins. I just wanted to see how it would look with a little work, or perhaps a look thrown onto it. This is by no means any kind of time consuming color correction, just played with it for a tiny bit. Pretty happy with the results though, just imagine if you get to really sit down and spend some time with it.

Looks like most of the shots you adjusted seemed a little dark for my taste. Of course the shots I adjusted in RC-X looked darker than the ones I posted as well. The H.264 usually looks a little brighter. But I only tried to add just enough contrast to preserve the detail in the shadows and so people could see if there was any noise to be had. Of course the real test is seeing the R3Ds.

Yea, I just threw some super quick corrections on, but it would be greatly beneficial to have the r3d's.
