  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When you see him, ask Errol is he remembers all of the swinging cocktail parties at Ruth Alley's apt in the 1980s.

I wonder if he is still in Radical Media's stable.

Were you on backorder for Red drives for a while, Dino?

Were you on backorder for Red drives for a while, Dino?

my camera was about the tenth delivered, rarely if ever are we backordered...we believed since day 1, hour 1, so we have been duly rewarded.

So Dino has this replaced your RAID set up? whatcha think?

And happy new YEAR big guy.

Dino,

Are you just rockin' (2) 256GB SSD's? I'm looking to make the jump but not sure what's a good amount to order. And what size.

IMO, two is not enough. I am of the school that you cant have enough media on a shoot, and filling up your media is a mistake. I know that most here will disagree for various reasons (mostly cost)...but in 4 years of shooting on a Red I have not lost one single frame of footage.

Personally I wouldn't go out with less than four ssd cards per camera, but we generally have at least 6.

Ive always preferred the smaller media unless the job dictates larger. With a Red One 64GB SSD's seem to be a perfect fit for our style. YMMV

We will be looking for your advice on SSD. How many to roll in various situations etc.

Please keep us in the loop.

Will the exact same module go onto the EPIC?

It will be an altogether different module, David.

the modules in epic and r1 are exactly the same in my experience.

i have used both the 128 and 256 and bought 2 x 256.

i work with several directors that do long takes and sometimes a 64 and 128 are not long enough. moreover, the smaller media will be too short for these guys when i put them in my epic. and also i will be getting 4 x 128 in the M package...so i figured the $/gig was lowest with the 256, so i went with those for now...

for over 3 years i used primarily 2 red raids at 320gig for my jobs going back and forth between the two and rarely did i fill them both up, usually we don't go past 50% on the media which is about 3 hours with the two drives.

now since it is slightly quicker to format the 256 compared to the 320, i use them and reformat them as we go...so today we shot heidi klum for lifetime and shot about 500 gigs with my camera over 9 rolls...so each card got formated 5 times.

in terms of speed, i just bought a new sonnet 4 port esata card for one of my mac pros...so going esata out of the red station into my mini sas g-speed es pro though an 8 core (early 2009) gave me about 11+ gigs per minute to download onto to my raid 5.

pretty fast.

ok hope that helps you guys wrap your head around this a bit...

funny i have worked every days since putting it on and will continue to work till tuesday.

Thanks Dino.

How many minutes are you getting out of them with RC 42? I guess any format/frame size, is possible with the R1 now? No more media is too slow....

Great work Dino and thanks so much..

David

i do not typically shoot rc 42 on commercials, just music videos, so i have only done commercials with it so far...

but ill have the camera fired up today at prep and ill try and do a test.

my times are significantly faster as i am writing to a disk that goes 722mb/s

Yes, I am working a slower system that's designed for transportability, its a trade off. I am installing a faster system on another cart and will post speed tests shortly. The trade off is portability, the slower system is cartridge based (4TB carts) and the carts fit in a small shipping case. I can copy to two carts simultaneously and ship one to the lab and one stays with the client or whoever. I prefer this over the edge in speed, especially now with the SSD's. But of course every job has different needs which is why we are building faster options.

11gb per minute is rocket ship fast dino...wow! Is that a single copy or a dual backup?

single copy with finder...never lost a frame in almost 4 years and i know for sure i have transferred more data than anyone.
