So I just got my Scarlet-W and when recording sometimes in each folder there are multiple duplicate files of the same clip all in .R3D - it doesn't always happen but there are multiple instances where it does. Is this normal? Never happened with my old Scarlet.

The reason you are seeing multiple "files" is because the take used more than 4GB. Has to do with how the info is stored and the maximum size for each volume. So, the longer the take - or less compression applied - translates to a larger file. Everytime you consume over 4GB in that take, you see another “file” generated.
For all intents and purposes, it is one file. You are just seeing how the system stores it.

Don't go renaming the reels - they already have their individual names. If you need to create a catalog, look to using the metadata.

When a clip is recorded, the system creates a unique name - for example:

D001_C017_0413SQ.RDC

D = Camera Name (Selected in setup menus)

001 = Reel

C017 = Clip 017

0413 = April 13th

SQ = a randomly generated two digit field to avoid duplicate file names. Can be letters, numbers, combination of both

If you change the naming of files contained under this folder, you are asking for real trouble. The individual files not only represent audio and video files, but associated metadata.

Matt got it right: It's R3D clip spanning for when a .r3d goes over 4.03GBs. It happens on any DSMC when you shoot over a certain length of time. The reason why you might not have seen it before is due to the data rate increase from 4K to 5K. Most programs that read .r3d will link the span automatically. This is for data integrity & filesystem compatibility purposes.
