I've been having this problem since yesterday and it doesn't seem to go away. Whenever I hit record I get the codec fault error. RED support hasn't responded yet and we're shooting tomorrow, so any help is very much appreciated. The error first started appearing when the camera was mounted on a cart that we pulled in the street. While there were some bumps it wasn't at all anything a camera shouldn't be able to handle. It was recording and suddenly we got the error and it won't stop showing up.

We want to shoot 4k 2:1 24fps. Here's a list of things I tried to solve the issue:

- change recording media CF/DRIVE
- reformatting media with different settings and going back to 4k 2:1 24fps
- use different lenses / no lenses
- change power source (battery/DC)
- install build 13
- reinstall build 15
- reset camera
- turn off quicktime proxies
- set different resolutions/quality settings/frame rates

If anyone has some more ideas as to what we can try or what the problem might be I would very much appreciate it!!

Thanks very much!

Sounds like a lose edge connector or something?

Sounds like a lose edge connector or something?

If it will not record 2K with the lens out of focus, it sounds like something worked lose, just a guess... I have found connectors to be more of a problem than the circuit boards they connect to, much of the time. BTW don't wiggle the connectors with the power on, you can blow out chips.

Have you tried Redcode 28 instead of Redcode 36?
Try it on mains power also.

There was a 24x7 Red support contact.....it was discussed on the forum in the last 2 months where you actually drag someone outta bed.
you could start here
http://www.red.com/contact_us and use Technical Support email.

sorry haven't used it before.
Maybe ask in main forum.
Good luck,
David

Where you say the bumpiness "wasn't anything a camera shouldn't be able to handle" do you mean cameras with hard drives(!??) or tape-based cameras? The cart scenario sounds like a hard-disk's worst nightmare :-( That really is a text-book situation for Compact Flash. Most of the codec errors seem to occur with the Red Drive - if you're still getting them with Compact Flash and after re-installing it sounds like a pretty serious camera fault. Have you tried recording anything in 2K or 3K on Compact Flash?

Connectors inside?

Connectors inside?

all connectors seem to be fine, unless it's something inside the body. the only things connected were the lcd and battery power.

tried redcode 28 and 36, neither works. also tried mains power.

That was what I ment, there may be card edge connectors, or plugs or cards inside the camera, someone in another post I think had a connector inside the HD box that they needed to push on better maybe, not sure, it was the guy who took his HD pack open and found that they are 5400 RPM drives inside...

Silver plated edge connectors are a time bomb, gold seem better. Could also be a cold solder joint that poped, or a piece of wire or a solder ball that rolled around and shorted something out. Sometimes circuit boards have voids in their traces or a through hole that is not plated good enough, these things can work fine until they get bumped and then "poof". Sometimes edge connectors can work loose if they are not held on with clips or glue.

Did you find a solution to this? Got the same error message today. Switched to CF cards and it stopped.. for now. Hope it doesn't start up again tomorrow.
