Recording 2 mono tracks

I am often ask by producers to record two separate mono tracks in camera so that without syncing external audio we can record from two mics and have clean independent tracks. We are using a wooden camera a box however the audio seems to be recording in camera as a mixed stereo. I’ve been talking to red support who say if I take a stereo to mono splitter I may be able to get independent mono tracks. Seems like such a basic thing to not be able to do in camera.

I’m now thinking of going with the old wooden camera a box (for dsmc 1) that had two separate cables and using a stereo to mono splitter to then go into the phones I put jack on the camera. Will this work and/or has anyone solved this problem?

No one has any insight on this? Is there another way to record individual channels on the epic-w camera?

I use the Teradek OMOD XLR2 to get clean independent audio tracks into my Gemini camera. This solution works really well and utilizes solid preamps bypassing the camera's internal ones. It also provides phantom power to mics, has limiters, timecode in and accepts mic or line level in when working with a mixer. It appears to have been discontinued but you may be able to find one on the used market or some online vendors. Make sure you get the Teradek branded version which is version 2 if you go this route.

I found this the best solution for my needs when either running sound solo into camera without an external mixer or when working with an audio person sending a mixed signal to camera.

Each channel is mono/independent. If you are listening to the audio in camera the headphone audio output is mixing each track to "Center".

You need to adjust the headphone audio settings so that mic 1 plays back on "Left" and mic 2 plays back on Right.

Normally when you look at the footage in your editor, you will see two audio tracks (not stereo).

Could this be a problem with resolve perhaps? I will investigate further.
