  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I was wondering, since the new MX sensor is 30x15mm if the same limitations in recording the width of the sensor on the Red One (4.5K max rather than the full 5K width, i.e. 24mm instead of 30mm) also applied to the height (13.7mm rather than the full 15mm).

I assume so (that you can't), but the full 15mm height would come in handy for 2X anamorphic shooting. Was just watching the Blu-ray if "Che" tonight and thinking about that issue. If you could use the full height of 15mm, then the anamorphic area would be 3.3K-ish.

"Che" (Part One) looks great, by the way, on Blu-ray. A few noisy underexposed shots and a few clippy overexposed shots, but for the most part, really rich anamorphic photography in the jungle.

Thanks for asking this David. I was wondering about this as well.

As far as I understand it, "5K" on the Epic and Scarlet S35 models still does not make use of the full 30x15 sensor -- it seems that there is some extra cushion for "look around" or other functionality that hasn't been disclosed yet. The photosites on the new sensor are the same size as the current Mysterium CMOS, which is 5.4um or 0.0054mm square. Running those numbers gives us 27.65mm x 13.82mm recordable for 5K, if we assume that 5K will be 5120x2560. I want to ASSume that the M-X sensor will actually be 2768 pixels tall. And I have been wondering, since 5K would not account for the full 30x15 sensor, if perhaps the full sensor area can be used in stills mode? And if anamorphic modes on the new camera will make use of the full 15mm sensor height, or close to it?

As for the RED ONE... We're still locked to the same internal processing and bandwidth restrictions after a sensor upgrade as we have before the upgrade. So I don't know if using more of the larger sensor is possible. We should also consider that the Mysterium sensor has an active pixel area of 4520x2540, essentially the same height as 5K 2:1 on Mysterium-X. And yet we have only been given modes that allow for recording up to 2304 lines of that; both 16:9 and 4K anamorphic modes. So if it's possible to get more vertical resolution out of the RED One, it has not happened yet. Perhaps it can with the larger sensor if there is indeed more vertical resolution as I mentioned above?

ASSuming that's possible, larger resolution working for us here, and we create a mode that's 2720 lines high (even multiple of 16 ; 170x16), we would need a frame width of 3264 to achieve 2.40:1 with 2X anamorphics. That is 8.8 megapixels whereas 4K 16:9 is 9.4 megapixels. I wonder if it would work? And if not, why? But then if it would, why do we not have a 3072x2540 mode right now?

So if the M-X sensor can have this hight in the RED One we would be able to record 4.5K 16x9...right? Would be cool if this could happen but of course I know we are limited to what the RED One can do because of its internal workings as of now.

If the RED One had the bandwidth, we could record 4.5K 16:9 with the Mysterium sensor.

Yeah I know. I was just kind of hoping that with the new boards in there with the upgrade to the M-X sensor we would be able to do 4.5K 16x9. But I don't think that has anything to do with it.
