Hi All !

We did a new shooting today, and there happend something...
First, and I heard that from other operators as well, the record button on the back side is hanging. You can pull it, but the camera don't stop to record. Thats not funny. I think thats a physicaly problem of the button... not of the software.
A hour later we had problems to mount the Red Drive. Shutting down the cam, taking off the battery, waiting some seconds, put it again on and restarting, the same. So we switched to the CF Cards and did the entire day with the cards. Tried it after shooting to mount, and did it fine, recording as well, clips ok.
A little bit later, after troubles with the red drive, we changed the battery because it went empty. Booting, looking to the startup window where you can see the chainsaw sign, software version etc. after "initalising", I saw the cam was showing build 12, but 13 was installed. Happend only one time...
EDIT:
White Balance and HD-SDI monitoring:
We measured with the color meter 2875K. When I set manual the WB to this value the hole screen was BLUE ! When I set it at 4300K the picture looked ok. Can somebody told me whats wrong there ?
Then the signal which is coming out on the HD-SDI has nothing to do with the picture which is recorded! Highlights for example looking there overexposed but on the recorded files ok, as we exposed regarding the lightmeter. colors are not correct... etc.

hey rainer.. try re-installing your firmware, it looks like it only was half-installed.

thats amazing. the camera came from red with this build installed.... :)

Hi All !

The monitoring is a rec709 representation of the raw being recorded and compresses the highlight for the monitor/meters significantly. Build 15 will
improve the monitoring.

Made the same experience with white balance, looks like if you dial in 5000°K (which is the sensors preset) scenes lit with 3200°K balanced light look neutral , and at 7400°K i get neutral looking pictures at 5600°K balanced HMI lighting. It looks for me like the camera has an offset to the sensor sensibility of 1800°K (3200->5000).

Try resetting your settings in the camera to default. One of the settings could be off as there isn't an 1800deg offset.

Rainer, in your opinion, is there anything good about this cam ?

Oh Yes there are much good points, and the cam makes really nice pictures. But there are much points to figure out, as we all are beta testers at the moment. Hopfefully all the points getting solved by red, because there are much major issues. So wait 2 or 3 month and we will see where the system is standing then. Think a lot of issues will be solved then.

So Deanan tell me please which setting should be off? Thats easy to say... Have you ever really worked with this cam on a production? We measure it with the color meter, at the preview output it looks totally different then which is recorded. Should I set the WB to the measured value, getting a fully blue screen on the monitor. Think a little bit about when I have a set only with tungsten light, Meter says 2875K and the monitor output is totally blue... Man there is no blue light !!!!!!!!!!!! Should I recording this, then offloading, waiting that the DIT says there is a problem with the WB, and doing this step till its really right? Man thats not a workflow for professionals, thats for kids. I don't have the time on set to test this. I thought the cam is what you see is what you get. And if its that, then is there something wrong... I will reflash the firmware and looking to it...

was there any problem with the lenses ....like hyperfocal ,any differnt to the film camera..?

Is RED ONE available in INDIA ?

Rainer, since you asked... I spent 8 weeks on set with Soderberg plus on numerous other shoots (Peter Jackson and others) so yes I have worked with the camera on a production.

To be more specific, by 'off' I mean something maybe set strangely in the camera for an unknown reason (can't say what from here). Can you go into
the Setup menu and reset the system, look, and user settings and then reboot.

You do need to test the camera and become familiar with it first or you can easily get confused on a real job. We've seen this on numerous productions where the crew has not had time to learn the camera. We recommend that professionals do this as they would with any new film stock or any other professional camera. Red is no different. Once of the biggest problems we see when people complain about things not working right is that they have not taken the time to learn the camera. That said, it's a very easy camera to learn compared to many HD cameras out there.

Back to WB, it only metadata so you can't get into trouble if you set the metadata wrong. Color meters don't always line up with cameras because they can see the spectrum differently or aren't calibrated the same. If you set the WB to tungsten, it's trying to balance the tungsten balance to daylight so there will be alot of blue gain put on the image to do so. I'm not sure from reading your comments if the image is just way too blue or if you simply want it to keep the tungsten warmth.

Hi Rainer,

we had this as well but not as extrem as you describe it. I actually see monitoring as a traditional videoassist. RED is not WYSWYG (RAW won't anyway). The sensor is approx. 320 ASA (up to ones taste) and balanced to 5000K, you cannot alter this. We ajusted the WB to our taste (kind of grading on set, or creating a LUT) not to Kelvin that we measured. It doesn't matter anyway since you monitor the picture just through a LUT.

The LUT could be designed in almost any ways but still has no influence on the recorded images. I would like to have a LUT that mimics the sensor as close as possible (discussed elsware). Others don't want it since the picture would scare clients (flat and ugly) and creates discussions no one wants on set.

Personally I am happy how it is implemented in the moment. The Kelvins are off for sure, that can be better implemented but again has no influence on the recorded RAWs.

Sorry for my hard tone... I should get back on facts.

I will do a test tomorrow, then we know more... think it will be the best way after a finished shooting to factory reset the cam and would be nice to load then presets from the sd card... that would be nice...

@hans:
I do it regarding my own taste... my goal is to have a good digital cam which has as much pros against a filmcam as possible. I have to describe the pros our producers on setworkflow as post.

have to sleep some hours...
