  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Recommended Apple Color Workflow?

You can do filmprints from AJA - at least some places, and the first is not a transcode, but a wrap, so: No. Not neccessarily...

Thanks, Don't want to be pushy but I did not get to the bothom of your comment about wraping and not neccessarily...

can you unwrap after color renders?

Ido.

1. DPXs out of RedTool of choice
1b. Composites and graphics
2. AJA wrap
3. FCP (no renders as that's gonna mess up your files)
4. Send to Color
5. Grade
6. Render AJA

Some places you'' be able to play out the AJA to film.
Option two would be to transcode the AJA to DPX with the AJA "unwrapping" tool.
Not optimal, but it works...

Thanks. I will probanly go with the second option.
Any known diversions caused by this wrap unwrap procedure?
I will be able to test it within 3 weeks, then I will send the same shot dpx's all the way and the wrap-grade-unwrap shot to the lab.
My worries are that my LUTs will not represent the film as they do with the common dpx workflow.

Thanks.

Ido.

Thanks Nigel.

If I understand you correctly then The thing is that the rendering of color goes back to the dpx's header and not the projects FPS. Thats why the EDL's solutution does not work. Until your next ver. that will be tweaking the headers we do not have a solution.
When can we expect that version?
Ido.

No, the rendering doesn't go back to the headers. The situation is:

- if you import an EDL to color and specify the footage FPS (say 25), color assumes all the footage is 25, doesn't look at the headers, and it comes in correctly

- if after importing you need to manually drag a clip in via the setup tab, and the header framerate is wrong (24) you'll get a frame skip. So the header of the first frame needs to be updated to 25.

The feature should be about a week away, I'm kicking Craig's ass daily!

Just curious...

When you export a AJA Kona 10-bit RGB Codec clip out of Color, is anyone else having issues opening that file in Quicktime compatible applications? Is there any reason for this? Using the AJA Quicktime to DPX converter obviously works, but I would have thought that you'd be able to open the Quicktime files in QT Player...

Is there something I'm missing?

Did you install the kona quicktime codec?

Yes, I've got all the correct codec's installed. Not sure what's going on... I'll test it on another system tonight.

Never mind. I tried the codec's on a couple of other systems and it worked fine. There must be some kind of conflict with that one machine...

Also, for those that are interested, I've now completed my final grade in Color and online in After Effects. The AJA workaround worked great. Thanks to everyone who helped! Now all I need is the final score and sound design, and I can take a holiday!

Ido I'm jumping to this discussion...

Grade something, with film out LUT, that cames from AJA 10bit 4:4:4 quicktime, then render it with no LUT in DPX and in AJA format and load them back to Color and check how they match with the film out LUT with the graded shot. If they are identical then we are ok, you can import quicktime and you can export DPX for me to do the film out.

From my experience Color it handle differently quicktime oriented material than what is doing with RGB files like DPX. In quicktime it adds a gamma shift to match FCP because it believes that since the source is quicktime then it should go back to FCP... so it shifts gamma to fix the mismatch that it has... in exactly that point we lose the WISWYG for film out...

For anyone still interested, Monkey Extract now includes a tool for updating DPX headers to change frame rates, etc.
