After having a couple of scary moments with the SanDisk FW800 reader and Shotput Pro, I wonder what is the recomended CF card reader for the 16GB cards.

We all know that the RED 16GB CF cards don`t behave like other CF cards. They`re not formattable and recordable for a lot of other appliances than the RED ONE. Which is cool.

I am currently on a gig where I have Shot Put Pro and the SanDisk CF card reader as working tools.

Today I discovered that ShotPut Pro would verify the copy to 2 different destinations, where only one copy was good, the other was bad.

I have been scanning through (not realtime playing back...) the shots manually in addittion to accepting the "verified" status from ShotPut Pro, but that didn't pick up the faulty frames.

AND in addition I got notice of faulty frames in a shot from 2 weeks ago today.

The shots come from separate cameras. The things the workflow share are

16GB RED CF Cards
SandDisk FW800 reader
ShotPut-pro
Rendering offlinefiles with Rocketcine-X (1740(

The differences are

FW800 disks (then) vs eSATA (now)
Cameras

I have (AFAIK....) not had any problem with files from RED RAIDs.

That leads to a couple of questions

Shot Put Pro???
I have suggested md5 copying, but have been given shot put pro "for speed, and because we have it"
Today one copy was good, the other bad.
On the 2 weeks old shot, both copies have problems.
Shotput didn't report an issue in either case.

SandDisk FW800 card reader???
I have been using this since my RED came back in march 2008 with no problems whatsoever. But not with 16GB RED cards.

Rocketcine-X
Today i saw on the renderstatus:
Problem with rende3ring frames XXX - error

I cannot remember having seen this earlier - but the earlier day was very busy. I may have overlooked it.
Will Rocketcine-X always detect problems like this.

Though:
Hail Rocketcine-X for rendering all but the corrupted frames right.

So...

What are your suggestions?

Cheers!

(who have lost his first RED frames over 2 years...)

I personally prefer R3D Data Manager software over ShotPut Pro. I am also currently using the Sonnet Qio reader, along with eSATA drives, and loving it!

Additionally, I own both Lexar readers and SanDisk readers, and find them both to be unreliable. After a long day of constant use, they can overheat (so I'm told), which causes problems. If you do use "cheap" readers I highly suggest swapping between 2 or 3 different units throughout the day.

I had issues with Lexar card readers, and as as some other discussions showed; there is no copying software that will detect broken frames, unless you are rendering out. I am about to inverst again in new card readers (I had two Lexars working for 25 shooting days, bought them new 6 weeks ago). But indeed , it looks like the 16GB cards give more problems than the "old" 8GB cards.

Having same issues as well..

There are once or twice where i tried to swap to much cheaper CF card reader some 3rd party brand, it copied everything perfectly but with Lexar, it seems to have some drop frames and the file wont convert.

I dont know if it's lexar or cf16gb is the problems. If i called both parties, i believe they will said to check with other party.

More specifically the Lexar Professional UDMA FireWire 800 Reader

This is my #1 reason for deciding to sell my Lexar and go with the Red Station. With Red's excellent service and support if there is ever a problem (malfunctioning readers are a major one) I know it will get taken care of quickly. Luckily I never had a problem with my Lexar....

Maybe it's easy for those who live in US. But outside US, this becomes a big problems, what seems to be fast in your region will become very slow outside the region. The "side effect" of RED Station, it will become exclusive in some ways. And i hope it wont head to that route and it should never be exclusive and i dont think RED intended it to be so. I would say it needs to be open to 3rd party. In my experience, CF 16GB certainly face more problems than 8 GB. Of course, one can say maybe it's your card reader, but i never face a single problems with 8Gb since the day i bought it by using the same Lexar Card Reader.

I never know the exact answer, what went wrong. Card ? Reader ? No one can tell.

The 8GB have worked flawlessly for as well, but the times they are a'changing... -:)

The RED Station is probably the only safe bet...
