  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Recap January 22, 2011...

Snip long post?!

You sayin I talk to much!?

Well, Epics no longer come with the CF Modules.. Only SSD modules.. I am guessing that will affect the price a little.

I've also heard rumor that the base I/O module would be replaced with the side handle.. Although I'd rather have an upgrade path to a PRO I/O module.

NOTE THESE ARE GUESSES.. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THEM AS FACT.

Point being.. I need to know what's coming.. What's not, and how much it all is

Jay

Hi Jay

I'm wondering if, just maybe, it isn't a priority for them to get all the extra pieces ready for purchase when your EPIC is ready. Perhaps they intend to put the camera in your hands while they straighten everything else out.

As you know, you can make use of the camera with just the body, a handle, and a lens...

Perhaps the way it will work is that when your number is called, you have 30 days to take delivery of the body but an unlimited amount of time to decide on the rest of your stage 2 package. You could have a credit and you could take all the time you need to decide on extra parts and how much extra you want to spend.

IF some of the key auxiliary parts aren't yet ready for prime time, this would be a way for them to get things rolling without having to provide a list.

...just throwing it out there.

Not at this point Joe. We need things locked down in order to plan. This may have been true a couple months ago, but we're about to ship now...

It's go time, and we need actual list of what Epic X includes.

Jay

They probably have all the pieces or a high majority 90% of them ready,

They said they were sourcing components (I'm sure there was a post on this but then again it maybe me dreaming) and I can't imagine a module being more difficult then the initial building of the camera itself, yes they are different but if techs can pull together a camera of this magnitude they surely can handle a module...

so my moneys on everything is ready they are just going through the paces before they announce pricing cause I don't think they want to change anything again after the next announcement, given things around here are always subject to change...

I agree jay - go time. The only thing that has really changed that should affect the package is the side ssd replacing side CF and, as I've analyzed without any refutation in other threads, there doesn't seem to be any reason that should change the price.

Options/upgrade paths are a different story, but that shouldn't affect the ability to lay out the "standard" package, which was just fine the way it was when we paid our $5K deposits. And also maybe email us with our number in line since for stage 2 that has been fixed since last may.

Although it may be a little iffy, some projection of time frame would be greatly appreciated. With the deposit and payment structure Red uses, financing has never been easy and these days it isn't just a matter of calling the bank and upping the home equity line since - like my career - my mortgage is "underwater" too. :-) I'm sure many others are in the same boat.

I'm sure you are getting antsy, and it's even worse for those of us that are in the first hundred or so. (I'm currently #41 in the stage 2 thread - would like to know the real number.)

It's info we all need to know soon. But I think the floodgates are about to open. As long as they give us 30 days to get our shtuff together, I think that's fair. While I'm not at the front of the line, I bet my first Epic-X will be in the first 250-300 shipped and I'd love to have my money in account at RED before my number comes up. So, when it does, they can ship ASAP.

I can see where you guys are coming from. ..and I don't think you're out of line to ask for some clarity. We've paid a sizable deposit and committed to much more. At some point prior to taking delivery we should know exactly what the options are.

...just trying to emphasize that the situation is very complex. I imagine they're dealing with the butterfly affect on an hourly basis.

No doubt, the RED team wants happy customers. ...and an official list would go a long way towards that end for many of us.

My guess: They're working overtime to make it happen.

I'm currently EDIT #12 in the stage 2 thread and I, for one, am not terribly concerned about the details. I know I'll be asked for the remainder of the $20,000 within 30 days of when my number comes up. When that happens, I'll get a camera I can shoot with. The details can be worked out later. I expect that (if I need extra funds for extra stuff) RED will give me time to raise the extra funds. This is the way it has worked in the past.

....just my point of view.

I hear ya Michael.. I am #58 in that thread... However I am guessing there are a few that may not have posted...

I really appreciated the update.

While I'm curious about the details, I'm not overly concerned about the configuration and pricing as RED has indicated that we'll have some level of control over component selection.

This is more complicated that it appears on first inspection due to the added complexity of part allocation across product lines.

I for one am hurting for additional media for my REDOne, and I'll bet there is significant pent up demand for SSD media for the existing camera.

(An update on the REDOne SSD side module would be very welcome btw Jim :-) )

So RED has to balance availability of things like media and evf/monitors which are currently scarce. Traditionally RED has appropriately prioritized existing customers with open orders, and I'll bet that continues to be the case.

From the outset RED has stated that accessories for the new camera would be allocated by stage number as well.

It's a complex dance, and all I ask is that we keep the required components for the existing cameras flowing during the excitement of shipping Epic, and that my Epic stage two can ship with a monitoring option of some sort, some media, and enough batteries to cover the charging period, and I'm all good for now.

But I'd really really really like that side handle to be available as well :-)

If you haven't ordered your SSD readers and SSD's yet...

Hey, Jay - I'd forgotten you were that low, I was thinking of my friend Jonny that's up in 1000+ range. So you're right there with me. I know a lot of people are fine with whatever happens, and I will deal with it whatever happens too. But at the moment I have several financing options - none of which are perfect - so the more info and warning, the less stress involved.

I mean, Jan was over on the sister site practically giving their air freight schedule, so someone understands the anticipation factor (cue Carly Simon) - a little more help on the Reduser side would be great!

If it helps at all.

Have $19,500.00 ready, minus the 5K you put down.

So $14,500.00 is what you committed to pay and have left to pay if you are stage II. I would say have that amount ready.

You know exactly what you bought for that amount and so does RED. If there are changes I am guessing that they will be fair and they will be generous.

I am basing this on the fact that I think there is a lot of integrity flying around, so our only basic "worry" is to make sure you have the $14,500.00, there is no surprise at all there, you agreed to pay $19, 500.00 with a $5,000.00 deposit that back in MAY 2010. You will have 30 days to come up with the $14,500.00.

That's what you signed up for, be ready for that. Then probably another 10K for goodies.
