  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Recap January 22, 2011...

My guess for the big announcement:
The long fabled Red Electronic Lenses with OLED markings.

..fortune cookie says..not too likely...

Jeff Kilgroe
... I'm betting we don't see RED's electronic lenses until we get closer to the next generation Monstro sensors as the lenses are designed to cover FF35.

Another idea, think REDPAD, could be based on the 9"-Touchscreen-LCD (and maybe replacing it completely).

When it comes to the movies, my wishlist includes "Batman: Dark Knight Rises", "Star Trek 2" and "Ghostbusters 3" but i think "Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol" is hot candidate too.

Don't forget to add the price of the SSD module. 1 500 $ - 500 $ CF unit = at least 1 000 $ to get SSD module + 950 $ for 64G mag = 2 000 $ to start with a SSD cam. Not sure everyone can afford it but I can't see how Scarlet could be used without a SSD: at 3K, you can only record few minutes on a CF.

The OP's original question was whether SSDs would be included in a "package." But, FWIW, every indication is that, if you want to upgrade the announced Scarlet Fixed "package" from CF module to SSD module, you will be given the opportunity to pay the difference.

As for record times, the specifics are around but just a quick analysis: 3K is just over half the data of 4K. Depending on the REDCode you choose, you can get about 8 or so minutes of 4K on a 16G card. That would suggest you could get 12-15 minutes (or so) from a Scarlet on to a CF card. Not fabulous but certainly workable.

yes exactly, there are some packages that are supposed to be announced for the epic-s, just wondering if the actual cards would be included but i doubt it haha

Almost like a roll of 35mm film.

Also... fingers crossed:

Congrats!

Congrats!

Congratulations to Jim and all of the Red Team. A couple of questions:
Will the Epic/Scarlet be distributed through other retailers or strictly at the Red Store, will there be assignable numbers and a line-up for orders?

Thanks.

Now that is a great first post! Thank you Jim for putting it all together.

All the best to the Red team through these steps, and the new ones being taken for the new tech! Can't wait to hear more about the "third generation".

Well my guess is that we will see a 3d-scarlet with two fixed lenses, adjustable stereobase, toe-in and even separable cams for hyperstereo... Well maybe more wishful thinking then a guess :-)

But we are talking about working prototypes on display. Not for them to be ready to ship.

Anyway, I will be using these lenses with my S35 as soon as they are available. No need to wait for my FF35.

How about a working PRORES conversion module? ready to ship.

that'll surely put salt in ARRI's wounds???

Something just hit me..

Something just hit me..

I cannot believe I just realized this..

If Jim is reading the tea leaves correctly, odds are I am going to have my Epic before NAB.

That means I could see an Epic in my hands within 3 to 6 weeks.

Kewl.

However...

I just realized, I don't know what I am getting!
There has never been a finalized list of what the Epic X for Stage II includes!!

It used to come with the base I/O module. What does it have now?

What is the final price?

Yikes!

I'm sure I am not alone when I say, that I need to begin getting funds together for all this since we are VERY CLOSE.

And so I would like to humbly request that a final list of items along with price for the Epic X package be posted.

It would also be nice to know what will be available when production lines begin, and what won't.

I need to get to planning!

Thanks so much!

Jay

PS I am fully aware there are NUMEROUS threads that answer this question in "parts" but there is not an official list type post.. That's what I am looking for.

[SNIP LONG POST]

I need to get to planning!

Same here. But - I also remembered Jim or Jarred posted once that we would get about a month's notice before having to pay up. While that may not be terribly long - it should be enough to at least find some kind of short-term way of funding the camera. Hopefully we'll be able to pay of the camera in a relatively short period. But it would be great to know more about what's included and what's not - especially if it has an impact on pricing.

Snip long post?!

You sayin I talk to much!?

Well, Epics no longer come with the CF Modules.. Only SSD modules.. I am guessing that will affect the price a little.

I've also heard rumor that the base I/O module would be replaced with the side handle.. Although I'd rather have an upgrade path to a PRO I/O module.

NOTE THESE ARE GUESSES.. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THEM AS FACT.

Point being.. I need to know what's coming.. What's not, and how much it all is

Jay

Wouldn't mind having a recap of all the new specs, prices etc. to be expected once the small scale production starts,

helps with the planning of what more would need to be spent etc. beyond the normal for a tricked out epic-x or just a few things upgraded etc.
