  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Recap January 22, 2011...

Sorry to sound thick but I've become a little confused over the fully fledged Epic (not light or S version) for stage 4 (the non RED One owners). Will that be available to us after the summer or just the Epic S? Is that also called Epic X or is that just for RED One owners..... doh! sorry.

Yes, Epic-X will be available to new customers (Stage 4) after existing customers get their Stage 2 and Stage 3's. $28,000 for the Brain.

I'm in for 2 Scarlets or Epic S, whatever I can get (pay for) before June 30th! Grant expiration date.

Stage 3.5 by summer!! awesome! right?

When will we see pricing for the upcoming products?

Exciting stuff coming. I need to go to NAB.

I think this roadmap is awesome, and I'm so pleased with the hard work the RED squad puts in. Although I do reservations of the upcoming productions being shot on Epic. Why does EVERY major studio feel the need to make ALL films in 3D?

Just as we talk about DOF, Lens selections, and Focal Lengths all being merely tools to use sparingly and for specific situations while creating a story. Why isn't 3D seem in the same light? It's as if Hollywood wants EVERYTHING in 3D.

Can you imagine Silence of the Lambs in "3D", or Shawshank Redemption in "3D", and how about The imitation of life in "3D"; am I the only one who thinks about this and how ridiculous the industry has become?

It's as if the movers and shakers really want us to buy into this 3D phenomenon so badly that they say, heck we'll just make EVERY film in 3D from now on, then they've gotta accept it.

I don't know but thats just how I feel.

the movies you named are not cgi heavy, the epic 3d movies are...so i say yes, 3d will add to the viewing expercience on these movies.
you wont see a clint eastwood 3d movie i suppose :)

One obvious word ...

MONEY.

You are thinking as an artist ... studios think it terms of marketing, ticket sales and profit. Wherever it will make them more money, and not be ridiculous (like Jane Austen in 3D) ... count on it being done 3D.

But this is a contentious topic, and so as not to derail this very important thread, I will shut up and say no further.

The Secret is a RED 4K monitor/projector :cornut:

The Secret is a RED 4K monitor/projector :nads:

This would be cool. Actually, I'd be curious to see if Red invests in developing higher-res studio monitoring solutions. Most of the monitors today are barely 720p (many SD) ... and even though I know there is only so much you can cram into a little screen ... I also think as the bigger sensor versions of the Epic get released, it's going to be harder to monitor and pull focus on today's monitors. Who better to innovate that then the same company that's innovating the biggest progress in camera resolution?

Jim,

From the other end of your market, when can we expect to be able to get an estimated delivery date for for our own Scarlet Fixed order? It would be helpful to be able to know our individual place in line, not that the Scarlet Fixed line is currently more than a disorganized crowd of people trying to make plans to use this incredible tool - and eager to place an order.

Piracy, higher ticket prices, and another tiered release platform for the home market. In cinema bootleg piracy would be a lot harder to manage if every film was 3D, and that's what the Cinemas/Studios want. Higher ticket prices help to amortize the cost of digital cinema uptake across 3D pictures, and once digital is installed anywhere helps restore profit margin by having a new accepted price point for cinema shows.

Then they can sell the film in home theatrical 3D version, 2D version, and in a couple more years no doubt again in a home release 4K version based on roadmaps not dissimilar to REDS I'm pretty sure.

On any given film, this may not be a massive advantage - but when your business is to own a library of properties, to be remastered, re released, and then eventually remade (once again also increasing sales of the original product potentially because of the marketing of the new product) then you ideally want everything to be able to be released in every format going forward.

Which (to get back on topic) the adoption of 4K plus mastering, and continued 3D remastering will happen at a studio level far more quickly than seems relevant to home consumers - because if you can make something once, and then for comparatively little cost sell it to the same market 3 times over 4 - you opt for the option that allows you to do that, every time.

Television is much more disposable, and television makers want the process to be slow enough that they can release many variants of the same technology in staged releases so inherently they will adopt 4K slower, because there is no pressing need to differentiate themselves until others differentiate themselves - be nice if there was the same sort of shakeup in the display arena that RED have helped happen in the acquisition arena...

If any tracking this thread are at Sundance this week and want to see some of the goods first hand...

Had the best chance meeting ever on Main St last night, where I asked what the press crew was shooting, turns out it was a movie that is just finishing that they told me was shot on this really amazing camera, with totally incredible images... I asked if that camera happened to be called the RED by any chance.. they said yes.. surprised that I knew what camera they used. Well you can imagine the fun after that... And the star of their movie is in a bunch of action movies now (they mentioned the Scorpion King) but when he was a kid - he was the Blue Power ranger - which I then told them they now shoot all the Power Ranger shows in Japan on the RED... more fun chatter occurred after that.

Sundance is more fun that should be allowed by Utah Law :-)

Criag makes a very good point. It's all about money. And as interested as I am in seeing EPIC 3D, I can't wait for this resurrected fad to go away.

Remember the '50s when 3D was going to change cinema forever?

Remember the '70s when 3D was going to change cinema forever?

Remember the '90s when 3D was going to change cinema forever?

This is why I'm absolutely thrilled that Christopher Nolan has refused to shoot the new Batman in 3D, despite the studios' objections. In fact, last I heard he wants to shoot as much of it as he can in IMAX, much more than was done on "The Dark Knight".

But I'm really looking forward to seeing something in the theater that was shot on an EPIC!

That is freaking awesome Ted, I stayed home to see my Packers make the Super Bowl... sounds like some great film's shot on RED are there.

thanks for sharing!

No problems on Spiderman... 4 weeks of shooting. Mark stated that he did not have one problem. I'm comfortable that we are ready for Primetime.

The list of features is impressive. They are certainly convinced that we are ready. We are now talking about $2B worth of major movies...

Jim
Epic is ready for primetime. Some tweaks here and there for sure, but for the most part, it's stable and looks amazing. People need to see the footage projected. That's when it really sinks in.

Someone asked about comparing R1 M-X to Epic. I was shooting alongside the Epic with my R1 the other night and feel there is no doubt that Epic is a notch above the R1 in many categories. There are the obvious ones. Resolution, less compression, HDR, higher quality slow motion, better processing, etc. But I think there are many other features that may fly under the radar at first but will probably become very important to people in everyday use of the camera. Some of these are major improvements over the R1.

Having said that, R1 M-X held its own and confirms for me what a force it still is. If people are unable to upgrade to an Epic for financial reasons, etc. rest assured that your M-X will shoot very good images moving forward until ready for an Epic. Epic will win a shootout if you compare the cameras side by side with identical lenses but it won't be a blowout. Epic will just win comfortably. :-)

+1

I'm exited to watch a film shot with the EPIC, but I really wish it wasn't in 3D. I'd enjoy seeing the new Spiderman and Hobbit films much more via Sony 4K in 2D, but I doubt that will ever happen. I'm also thrilled about Nolan's plans to shoot more of the Rises in IMAX; that will be a visual feast that won't soon be forgotten.
