  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Recap January 22, 2011...

Fantastic news! This is going to be a great year.
Anyone know when orders will be taken for epic-s or scarlet.

RedRay Pro -at the moment it's a playback device (which we're all dying to see)...but how do we record to SSD from our NLE's? This seems to be a crucial piece of missing info, aside from price of course.

Yes, I also want to know how to convert from DPX to REDRAY™ 4K RGB.

To all existing customers? that would mean, more or less then 8000 customers
does this sound realistic ? hmmmm....:001_unsure:

anyway, hope you right jim
Not sure if he has stipulated existing eligible camera owners, but that could also be interpreted as known existing customers... that is, Stage 2 deposit holders.

Hi Jim,

Any chance the Red Rocket card could be used to speed up encoding to redray codec?

Any chance of a RedFlix, like Netflix but for 4k streaming or maybe an itunes like store?

Lastly, is there a price on the Epic X yet?

well, i interpret ALL EXISTING CUSTOMERS, as ALL EXISTING CUSTOMERS, that means ALL EXISTING CUSTOMERS will have there EPIC-X by summer 2011.

For myself, a part from beeing able to rent some Epic cameras as soon as possible in France, I really hope I can buy a Scarlet Fixed as soon as it is possible ! (which mean I got to get the money first...)

Hope you are right. But yours, and for that matter, my interpretations are irrelevant. Actual meaning will carry the day.

Thank you, Jim, and the entire RED TEAM...both for this exciting update and your relentless drive and vision! This is all fantastic news, and should go a long way to quiet the RED critics and naysayers.

Beyond the long-awaited delivery of the EPIC and Scarlet cameras, I am also extremely excited to see what 2011 brings in the development of post-production tools. We need to improve and enhance workflows as we all integrate these powerful new capabilities into our worlds. As Storm and REDCineX evolve and mature, and our NLEs allow us to work with RED footage and REDRocket even more easily than they currently do, the real power of 5K, RAW and HDRx™ will make it easier post-production professionals to tell the stories and realize the vision of directors and cinematographers.

Jim's vacation after NAB 2011.
Much deserved, Jim, and probably the thing on this list you are most looking forward to! Have an umbrella drink on me!

i think it would be fair, if jim would clarify that, because its an important information for many people here, waiting to make the right decision.

While I can totally understand the excitement over these news and I honestly think Red has every right to be extremely proud of where they are now (and where they're heading), I cannot help but notice 2 things in the list: first of all, these are almost all 3D (not being a fan of the format, it doesn't really matter to me), so while it clearly shows that Epic is becoming the de facto choice for that kind of production, and given its size it makes perfect sense, i'll be more interested in seeing the camera used in a more "traditional" way, because realistically that's what's going to happen on this side of the world for most things (and I guess Soderbergh and Fincher movies in the list will answer that question, though they were shot on MX as well).

I don't know how true this claim is, but I recently read that virtually every green-lit motion picture for late 2011/2012 with a large budget is shooting 3D. If that's true - RED is going to be leading the way.

And from has been said about the footage from Spiderman, it will look just as fantastic in 2D as well :)

Guys (sorry Jim if I'm getting this wrong) I think Jim was talking about Stage 2 and -- maybe -- Stage 3 people in that statement ... so that's certainly NOT all 8,000 R1 owners.

While I have no way of knowing, I doubt more than 25% (2,000) made it into Stage 2, but Stage 3 will probably be pretty big ....

Still, it's a fact that not EVERY previous Red owner will upgrade to Epic-X ... some will go the Epic-S or Scarlet route as well. But just how many? Well, not even Red knows that.

I think we can only wait and see :)

I would say an existing customer is someone who owns a RED ONE today, and exists. After their orders are filled, others can get their orders filled. If the assembly line can make 90 cameras a day they could make 8000 in three months. If they can make Ten Cameras a day they can make close to One Thousand in Three months. Hey, 8000 X 28000 , plus accessories and T-Shirts, we're starting to talk serious cash flow. A Billion Dollar Company, (again). The investment will pay off ... they deserve it! With much more good stuff on the horizon! Keep funding that R&D. Jim has earned a short vacation.
