Hello,

Can you tell me the differences between REC709 and REDSPACE (color space and gamma space).

I am totally confused and I don't know what to use.

Please help!

I find that people underexpose with redspace. Many people seem to like the highlights and the lift in the mids makes 18% gray map higher, but it you aren't using as much of sensor as you could.

I wonder what would happen if you used redspace, set exposure to -1 in camera and exposed to the right, would you get a similar look while using more of the sensor's dynamic range?

REC 709 or REDSPACE

In either case, I use a good waveform monitor or even the built in waveform on the Panasonic 17" monitor. I often don't have control with the footages once I have shot the project; I feel more comfortable delivering client dailies that uses the entire IRE range -- call me old fashioned.

I find, personally, that I tend to underexpose if I am shooting in Redspace. I use REC709 and turn the saturation up to 1.3/1.4 on the camera and everything looks great.

REC709 already looks over-saturated to me. Are you really cranking the saturation UP using that setting in camera?

Also, I don't feel comfortable using the waveform on an external monitor too much since the REC709 and REDSPACE IRE levels are different from the raw file. I'm halfway to making an in-camera LUT (so to speak) that will give you the same IRE readings in REC709 as in RAW, which will make your stoplights accurate and keep you from having to switch back and forth from REC709 and raw.

On the other hand, if you're outputting to HD (which is REC709) then you won't be able to use all the range of the raw since 709 has a lower range than the RED RAW contains.
