Hi,
Has anyone been able to acquire a realtime playback in Color with Red files? If yes then with what configuration?
Thks
Harcharan

That configuration is called Scratch …

Color

Hi,
Then how are people planning and doing CC in color and making the Film output.....

If you don't want to spend $$$ you have to live with limitations. One of them is limited playback in Color. But that doesn't mean you can't do color grading.

Please tell me a bit more:
- Which graphics card do you have?
- Which framerate do you get?
- What's you final destination, film or video?

Hi,
The final destination in for film.We have an Intel based MAC with 8GB RAM and Kona 3 card.In Color we are getting the preview to our Sony LMD1700 monitor with HD-SDI.

But we are I think getting around 5-10FPs and some frame jumping. Our hard drives are normal sata drives.

When we are playing back the footage even in FCP we are getting same performance.
My question is that if we install a faster Hard drive such as Caldigit HDpro and increase the RAM wont the preview be near to real time or real time.

Which graphics card is recommended on MAC for grading?

Monitor

Monitor

Hi,
Yes....By the which monitor is recommended for Color grading.

We are using the ATI 3870 and we get about 16 fps with one primary and one secondary grade.
The graphics card is very important for Color's performance, and output via any additional video card might slow it down further.

For monitoring we are using a Quato Motion Excellence 260 via DVI, calibrated for DCI. Not the best, but the cheapest with decent hardware calibration.

I wonder how the better GeForce 200 series cards will manage with color on Intel based Macs..?

This may sound like a dumb question, but is Blu-Ray 8-bit?

How much is that Quato Motion Excellence 260? I've never seen it.

I'm not sure any NVidia card will improve performance – Color (ex Final Touch) was built around ATI.
Blu-Ray is 8 bit until now, but x.v.Color can support greater bit depth via HDMI 1.3.

The Quato is about 5K€ (including colorimeter and software), here are some specs:

Ref Monitor

Hi,
Are you using normal Sata HDD's or what?
Arent you using anything for ref video monitor?

We are using an external RAID, but you can get along with RAIDed SATAs inside the MacPro (if you care for backup!).
When going to film we don't use video.
When going to video, we use ProRes 422, a BlackMagic card and a JVC HD tube monitor.

Ouch forget it... :) I am looking for the most affordable 1080p Blu-Ray solution. Still not working with Red footage, not for a while still but I want to be ready.

You can use normal SATA 7200.10 drives but you will need a nice RAID enclosure that can couple several of them into something super fast and that can offer some redundancy too.

Which JVC monitor is that?

Hi,
What LUT are you using while grading in Color ?
Is it the in built LUT of Color?
Which workflow gives you better result :

1.FCP(Native Red footage)>Color>Out in DPX in 2K or
2.FCP(Native Red Footage>XML to Crimsons>Output DPX>Color>output DPX in 2K for Final print
3.Redcine>output to 2KDPX>FCP with Gluetools>Color>output DPX in 2K for Final print

Thks

Grüss Dich Uli,
are you able to get 30bit performance out of the ATI 3870 card into your monitor? I'm using the HP LP2480zx Dreamcolor and am looking into the ATI 3870...if it can do 30bits out to the monitor.

Danke schön

Jean

No, it's sending 8 bits like anything else. I'm afraid the OS is not supporting that. Might work via HDMI, we didn't have the opportunity to test the MXO2 yet.

I've got the Nvidia 5600fx that delivers roughly the same performance with Color as Uli's setup does. The advantage of the Nvidia 5600fx is that all the mid-end CC apps., Scratch and SpeedGrade, rely on its shader.

BTW, I get RT out of SpeedGrade up to 2K. Anyone who wants a cross-platform grading solution should have a look at SpeedGrade. The new 2009 version has the Red SDK implemented. FYI, SpeedGrade makes EDL based roundtripping possible, be it FCP, PremierPro what ever - any platform. Love it.

Uli, how do you think does the Quato compare to an Eizo. Are the panels any better? How do the blacks hold? And, is it already 10 Bit? On their specs site I could not find and commnet on this matter.

Hans

The main advantage of the Quato is the SDI input – if you need it. The blacks aren't any better than Eizo, the panel of the more expensive 260 is similar in gamut to Eizo.

I doesn't offer 10 bit via DVI, only SDI.

So, if you don't need SDI, the Eizo (or the HP, which I've not yet seen close-up) with hardware calibration is a pretty interesting deal. Oops, wait a moment: does the Eizo support 48 Hz?

Yes, it does support 48Hz and even better 50Hz and for the folks on the otherside of the pond 60Hz.
