I'll never use my real name because I can't say things like, "you suck" or "stop being such a bitch" and get away with it.

Sincerely,

Jason Francois

PS-oops

PSS- I guess I'd better PM Jason Ramsey and ask to not be banned. :)

Ran across this information on the New Scientist website tonight and thought I would post it here to explain why I am personally paranoid about using my real name...

"Much effort is expended finding new ways to gather data on people. A company called Umbria uses software to analyse millions of blog and forum posts every day, using sentence structure, word choice and quirks in punctuation to determine the blogger's gender, age interests and opinion......

.....Databases know more about you than you realise. A Carnegie Mellon University study recently showed that simply by knowing gender, birth date and postal zip code, 87% of people in the United States could be pinpointed by name."

George Orwell thought Big Brother was some all powerful hovering govt. Agency. Bet he would be surprised to learn that Big Brother is privately ouned and is manifest in the form of two benign-looking entrepeneurs who started a search engine.

I should probably take this very good opportunity to just shut up, since they probably know where I live.:umm: :holloween:

Make sure you don't post your SS# along with any comments you make on this forum! Then you'll be really in trouble!
The truth is that if people are paranoid about using their real names to participate in a forum the most simple solution is DON'T PARTICIPATE! That's all, just read what everybody else have to say. If anybody is afraid of big brother or whatever then first of all tell the goverment to take back your SS# because it compromises your identity. If they refuse then don't go to a hospital, join a union, get a credit card, apply for a loan, buy a house, buy a car, buy a motorcycle, have a child, because your name and SS# might be exposed to identity theft. Please.

John, actually did try to resign from this forum but so far have been unsuccessful. Guess you haven't had a bad experience yet with a credit card. I did a couple of years ago when someone got hold of my Debbie Card number. Luckily, they got greedy so someone from the Gap called and asked if I had ordered thousands of dollars worth of merchandise to be shipped to Indonesia. I thought for a minute and told her that I don't think I had. She said "No problem" and canceled the order. If they had tried to get a reasonable amount, they could have cleaned out my account before I ever found out.

Thank goodness RED has already done that so I don't have to worry about that right now. Someday, however, a new day will dawn and I may have cause to worry again.

number six... you do know you can use your first name and last initial if you are that paranoid about it right? don't see how that is going to get big brother finding out about you.

But, if you are that paranoid about it and people knowing your first name is too much for you, then just let me know and I'll fix you up as per your request.

later,
Jason

O.K., thanks. Remove me.

Perhaps he can get a new name and SS# sort of like entering the witness protection program. BTW my credit is so bad that if anybody stole my identity they will be in real trouble!

Actually, no. Sorry. I've always been stubborn when I see no good reason for something. Seeing everyone convert over to their real names takes away the ambiance of this forum. It suddenly seems like a cold dark place filled with just people.:cold: The personality has vanished.:w00t:

REDuser has become a manual instead of a vibrant story. I'll still come here to read the manual, but I will only read the RECON section.

Not trying to change things here... just explaining myself.

I will never post with my real name on an Internet board that's open to search engines. If that means not posting on Reduser.net again, then that will be the choice I will have to make.

I've always found a forum with a lot of anonymous posters a lot more "cold" than one with real names... "just people"??? Experiencing the company of real people is a negative thing... and fake nicknames hiding people's identities somehow creates a more real and warm social experience??? Odd way to look at things. Suggests a rather low view of "just people". Imagine only going to social events where people wore masks and won't use their names -- that's "warm" and inviting?

I've actually formed friendships and professional relationships over the years with people online who have posted under their real names, years before I met them face to face. I can't say the same thing happened with people posting under pseudonyms.

Obviously have struck a raw nerve with you and Mark L. Pederson (really liked him better as OffHollywood, but that's just me). Wasn't pointing at anyone in particular.

But since I've offended each of you, good thing I wasn't using my real name of J. P. Bolivar Shagnausty.

Uh, oh:pinch: .... I've let the cat out of the bag. Guess now you understand why I didn't want to use my real moniker, huh.?

Anyway, we Shagnaustys are a more laid back bunch than most. But an alias just wouldn't work with you anyway, David. Your postings demand a real name. Very businesslike... very predictable (You should think of that as meaning "In a good way.)

As for forming relationships with people online, I take a different tack. I form opinions of people here on REDuser (my only forum) with reservations that will either be confirmed or dissolved WHEN or IF I meet them in person. Being read or reading hundreds of strangers outpourings is an audience... not a one-on-one meeting. If I'm in an audience I'm not standing up shouting "My name is J. P. Bolivar Shagnausty" to the whole audience. I may however, introduce myself to the person next to me.... if she's hot.

Afterthought: In re: your remark Imagine only going to social events where people wore masks and won't use their names -- that's "warm" and inviting?...

That's called a Masquerade Ball. They were very popular among the French who are indeed a "warm" (maybe not inviting) blooded people. There was a mystery there. Not an office filled with cubicles but with rooms that people could walk in to when invited (PMs.)

Not my experience—I've formed quite good and professional relationships with people using pseudonyms. Later able to reveal personal information selectively and at my leisure without the possibility of being google-stalked by 9 billion people is very nice.

Paranoid...

Yes... paranoia is a conserved trait. A trait is conserved over evolutionary time when it serves a purpose. Since the trait has survived, then obviously it is useful for the carrier's survival. It has helped keep me from surprising a rattlesnake, and therefore getting struck by it, more than once.

I know it is easy to be in a large city like Mumbai and feel you can let your guard doun, but in today's connected world a little paranoia can be useful.

Just sayin...
