Re: Red dragon

Hi everyone,

I am about to buy an epic x red dragon and could use some advice. I was going to order a new camera from red via the local dealers and have paid about 85 %. It was for a very basic packge, the brain and only the absolutely critical bits to start filming. The current dollar exchange rate has added a lot to the price over the last couple of months. In an effort to help me the dealers have offered to sell one of their demo red x models with more bits and pieces in the package. It has been rented out for 3 jobs and has clocked up 160 hours. The dealer says there is nothing wrong with the camera and the sale is motivated by their interest in purchasing the weapon to cater for big clients (at +- 2 million zar that is way beyond my budget and probably overkill for someone starting out).

The camera is under guarantee, the seller/ dealer / distributor will show me the ropes of using a dragon (I never used one), promises to help me with any problems I may have and I already have a good relationship with them.

Is 160 hours a lot? What should I keep an eye out for? It seems like a good deal and a sensible purchase. (I think what bugs me is that the camera has been out of the rentals store in strangers' hands. Out of the shop on a shoot, it is impossible to tell how the camera was handled.) I guess the fact that I would be getting it from a local red dealer makes a huge difference (vs a private sale from an overseas seller).

[I saw the package yesterday. Externally, it is in excellent / superb condition. It is under the 2 year guarantee and the transfer of ownership status is being investigated. I have requested a detailed rental history. ie who used the camera, how and where.]

Thanks Uma

160 hours is certainly not a lot at all. But others who have bought second hand can chime in with better information. As long as everything seems to check out, and the price advantage is significant enough, it should be a solid purchase. If the price advantage is 10% or less, I would still go new solely for peace of mind, longer warranty etc.

160 hours is nothing! The 'run time' is a hangover from when cameras had moving parts .... these cameras are basically computers with no moving parts so the 'run time' statistic is basically meaningless ... on the plus side .... if the camera had a defect it would have shown up by now. Take the deal and put the savings into a production!

I reached 100 hours by just testing out the camera, no real production :tongue_smilie:

Look at it another way, the camera is thoroughly tested, just make sure the price is right and warranty is the same more or less.

As everyone else has mentioned, 160 hours is nothing in the scheme of things.

160 hours is as new. It's just a 2 weeks / 10 hours "camera on" per day production. Just update the firmware and blackshade for different exposures and you see one more hour in the camera.

Agreed! Would add that I hope you've tested your computer set up for handling your Dragon files. My present lap top has proven a serious disappointment for working with, even just converting files from Dragon. Major downer so you've been warned! On to CC for now. YUCK!

Thanks! You guys are awesome! I am happy to not worry about the hours. The price is good. I think I will be paying as for a new very basic setup (the barest minimum required to shoot) if ordered now, but I will be getting additional accessories that give me a more functional / better package. Just await the transfer of ownership and warranty details. Thanks again. Dreadfully excited!:emote_happyhappy:
