I'm working on a project and the colorist has requested to make the final color correction in RCX.
Here's my workflow I'm going to use, but correct me if I'm wrong:
-get proxies from clipfinder and drag them into final cut
-picture lock cut and export xml of sequence

Here's where I'm not sure: do I reconnect back to the original 4k file in clipfinder and then send it to RCX or just go stright from FCP with my picture lock xml to RCX?
Point me in the right direction people.

Apparently RCX can read FCP xml's to some degree.

The FCP -->> Clipfinder -->> RCX -->> Clipfinder -->> FCP for titles and other non-RED passes is definitely working, though.

If you can finnish everything in RCX and have no need for graphics/titles/non-red material, I guess you could go directly to RCX, if you prepare your timeline like you would have done for an EDL.

I have a hard time understanding the preference for RCX over Color for a final grade, though.

Redcine X can read XML from FCP by now, but the last time I tried it, RCX kept on crashing on my directly exported XML from FCP. I tried good old XML2RCX by Mikael Lubtchansky and it worked fine on the same timeline. I still really like it, it works easy and it works every time.

Sure...

but with the combination of Rocket support, being able to grade non r3d material, secondaries, LUTs and actually being a grading app of sorts Color has somethings going for it...

Anyways. Good luck!

Yes, very true. There are some (important) things that Color has over redcine x. Still, if it is a project on a tight schedule or less demanding when it comes to LUT etc, a quick first grade is easily done this way. It is really quick and as far as I know bug free. I like working bug free :) Color still has me pulling out hair every now and then. Usually when on a tight deadline.

GunLiek,

From Clipfinder what do I send out of it to RCX to make sure everything uploads correctly? And then what do I send back to Clipfinder after working in RCX?

depends if you

a) want to grade RAW in color
b) want to grade redlogfilm prores/dpx in color rendered out from your edit.

I want to grade the RAW in RCX instead of color. The DoP I'm working with is requesting that. I'm just not sure what the steps are? Do I: export xml from fcp to reconnect to 4k original through clipfinder and then send to RXC; or can I export an xml from fcp to import directly into RCX?

If your timeline isn't too complicated, you can probably simply open your FCP XML in Redcine X without trouble. Maybe more important is how you want to conform or finish things. If you just stick with the proxies, you can recreate those in RedcineX after your coloring and all will be updated fine in FCP. In FCP you could then make a Prores4444 master out of that if you like. That is I think the easiest and quickest route you could take in and out of RedcineX, and it works. But it does come with limits as Gunleik already mentioned.

OK. The simplest/least buggy way:

Edit FCP (I assume from prores proxies)
NB. No speedchanges or effects or transitions. If you've been doing any re-framing it cannot be keyframed, and the re-framing will have to be re-done manually in RCX.

Export XML

Import XML into clipfinder. (Or directly into RCX...)

If clipfinder:
reconform to cameraproxies.
(It may sometimes be neccessary to regenerate the cameraproxies prior to this step. Currently that seems to be best to do in RCX...)

If Clipfinder:
Choose: Send to RCX bin or timeline.
If you send to timeline, make sure that the whole timeline is in one bin...

You _could_ choose subclipconform. I would advice against it. "merged" with handles i much less prone to failure...

Grade

Export "Bin-->al clips" with original filename to a new directory.

Open XML in clipfinder and reconform to the graded files.

Best of luck!

Do tests!

Have to add, though:

I wouldn't recomend this workflow...

Yeah, to be honest you're just asking for trouble. And it really makes no sense when, as mentioned before, there really isn't anything RC-X can do that Color cannot.

For myself I want to finish at Pro Res 4444 just for archive purposes. The end product that I'm passing off to the client will probably want Pro Res 422 or maybe h.264. However, I don't plan on exporting proxies out of RCX to bring into FCP and as far I can see we aren't doing any vsfx stuff just generic cuts. It's just for a 30sec commercial.
