Dragged a clip onto the timeline, trimmed and deleted some footage from both ends then exported a 1080 file
from the R3D. All worked fine BUT..... on opening the same original source file on my external drive the following
day, I found that it had been trimmed and that I had lost the beginning and end of the original clip.

I'm sure this isn't right.......or have I made a mistake somewhere along the way?

Joe, I think the trim tool was meant to actually trim the r3d to allow the smaller r3d file of just the part you really want. For example every once in a while underwater, we think we hit stop but didn't and it runs on for 5 or 10 minutes when we only wanted 10 seconds. In the early days there was no way to trim the raw fike with exporting to a "baked" format. Trimming allows us to save just the part we want but still in raw.

Thanks for the reply Mike - so how do you export just part of a clip without trashing the rest?

Joe,
All you did (it sounds like) is trim the R3d and exported a version of it....so when you go back to that file....you should see the in and out highlighted on the original R3d....so then just Cntrl click it and the in or out point should go away.....you can also find this in the manual on how to trip R3d's....this is MUCH different than actually trimming and exporting an R3d under "Trim R3d" to get a new R3d file.

.....you did the correct thing to transcode the portion of the clip you wanted....now go back and Cntrl click the in and out points to see the original length clip.

You can also right-click on the source clip and select "Clear In & Out Points" from the menu options.
