Can any one tell me if RC-X is multi threaded and can run more than one render at the same time. It has a preference preset I can set to 6 but appears to only run one transcode at a time in the queue ?

Im assuming it only runs one transcode per core and doesnt segment a single transcode to run multi threaded on several cores at once ?

thanks,

Dave

It can render up to 6 individual clips simultaneously, but not in a timeline (which I think is a glitch.) If you render out the bin, it'll do 6 at the same time (you'll see each individual clip going with it's own percentage meter.) That said, in my limited testing and despite using more of the cores (activity monitor or task manager) it actually seems to be slower overall.

It is definitely limited to one transcode per core (aka does NOT fire all cores on a single transcode). I think a lot of people are waiting/hoping for decent multithreaded support as it should literally be 2x/4x faster via brute force. Unfortunately it isn't easy to code that and RED is (understandably) frying bigger fish... In the meantime try using Adobe if you can, as it has decent/better multi-threading support (although I think it's still limited to the RED SDK so mileage varies... plus the interface isn't as nice as RCX for first pass colour correction.)

That being said, going to 1080p DNxHD or ProRes at 1/2 premium debayer should be pretty damn fast (only 2x~3x real-time on an i7 PC) assuming you aren't using the post-processing stuff (alchemy group, unsharp mask, grain, etc) in RCX.

UPDATE: This is easily the Parentheses Post of the Year.... No sentence in this post escaped the grasp of my "(" ")"....

Here's a thread (that was a bit buried) that details A) how to actually turn on this functionality (it's not immediately obvious) and also B) Has some actual times of tests that I've performed:

Long story short: if you have a Rocket, do not use the multi threading. IF you don't, and have a lot of cores and are also not maxing out your I/O, then do use multi threading. But the Rocket is still better by far.

Thanks this works.

Not sure why its not as obvious to set up as it should be.
