  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RAW RULES and 720/1080 debate

2. Will 2K Raw in the one build be both windowed and scaled? Will RGB be available only full sensor?

"The long term plan is 2K windowed and scaled. RGB answers in a few weeks."
as Jim posted in post #122 this thread.

Aye.. sorry, not reading as closely as I should be.

I guess when it comes right down to it, it seems like Jim has a good plan at this point so there is no need to get all up in arms.

I agree with TJ that shooting 2K and switching between windowed and scaled is going to be the way to go, you'll be getting maximum flexability with lenses, frame rates, ad depth of field. Plus you can simply crop to 1080 and have overscan space for stabilization etc. I think that flexability could proove to be the real workhorse of this system.

However I think we should continue talking about this as new information comes out... For example when 2K scaled RC RAW is enabled it will be interesting to hear how folks are feeling.

I fully expect the 2K images from the RED to be as good or probably Better than the 2K Silicon Imaging camera shown at NAB last year. Their output on 1080 screens looked like pretty nice HD more than comparable to any Sony or Panasonic camera. Although 4K is wonderful, I wonder how much difference there will actually be when we can compare the same scene in 1080HD downconverted from 4K or 2K full sensor? I predict the main use of 4K will be for feature film/ either digitally projected or transferred to 35mm/Imax/ and other very large screen venues like Gibby Vision3D, I think the difference may not be all that much when shown on HDtv and I think not detectable when shown in SD. Guess we just haft wait n see!

Shooting windowed is not a good alternative for many of us, because it affects the DOF, dynamic range, lens choices, etc, plus a cropped image simply will not hold up against a downsampled image, perdiod. Until 2K scaled is available, please do not eliminate 1080 RGB scaled.

You see… it's simple…
Why don't we all agree on this for heaven's sake:wink:

Yours(bring the 2k scaled @ 100fps first)Emmanuel

Very different. Do you remember what happened in fashion photography when digital-backs came out?

Overnight, that world went digtal. It all changed. Very fast. Large format still photography became - how many megapixles?

This little camera is opening a door many have been banging on for a long time.

This isn't always the case. I expected HDTV to take over 7 years ago. I expected digital projection to be in several thousand theaters 3 years ago.

It's easier to make predictions when the technology is revolutionary like Red, but still there are factors outside of anyone's control.

Thomas - that is a true statement, but if you look closely at your examples of HDTV and digital projection, there were VERY clear barriers between the technology and the consumer.

The only barrier RED has, is if they can actually make as many cameras as they say they can, for the current price point, and support (repair/service) that product.

Red can deliver a better image to ANY format that exists today PLUS extreme quality in the "potentially expanding" formats of 2K or 4K digital cinema projection - at a much cheaper price point. Pretty tough for it to not to cause some serious disruption.

Jaggies and supersampling aside, in theory a 14bit AD on a 2k sensor would deliver smoother pictures than the 12bit AD on RED.
I hope14bit AD is in the RED pipe as that is what is standard on new HD cameras.

Ahhhhhh......but I've been shooting 4K RAW all week, and forgot about full size scaled to 1080p RGB for broadcast rates with the same glass. Yeah..that'll be good to have 60p to generate 720p60 or 1080i60. I'm happy with the 24p stuff for now for what I want to do.
