  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RAVEN on the DJI Ronin M

Question for everyone. Do you think a Raven with a 12mm Rokinon, 4.7-inch display, XL Module + XL battery will fit on the M? Or should I go to the full-sized Ronin?
Unless Raven turns out to be heavier than current dragon, save your money and most especially strenght, go ronin m. Rokinon 12mm is a tad lighter than 24, and like I said earlier all my rental clients love the dragon + rokinon 24 (and sometimes tokina 11-16) on the ronin-m, however I will doubt the if XL Module + XL battery will fit on the M. Might have to go belt clip route

Form factor wise, you should have no problem if you are going with a jetpack, weight wise, just try to refrain from putting too much weight below the handle bars

Cheaper to buy a BMD 1080 5" with prores recorder for $500 and an HDMI cable for less and you have an extra monitor for other uses like director/client/follow focus, etc. monitor when not flying.

Is the BMD recorder even good? Or would you get the new SmallHD 702 lite?

All I know is what I've seen on reviews.
I like the idea of the internal recording 'cause instead of having to play back from the camera I can have the client review on their own. At lest that's the plan.
Having an extra monitor for follow focus it's also a good use for it.

I would not assume that the HDMI port sends record flags on the DSMC2 bodies, which is kind of being assumed. Maybe if you had a very thin SDI cable.

Recorder to me is a freebie. If it works with HDSDI perfect. If not, I'll have the client record/stop if they want review without slowing down production.

Just finished my first shoot with a Ronin-M. Had a Canon 5D3 with 24-70L on it at less than 4lbs total. Sure, I expected my arms and shoulders to hurt but I didn't expect it to be from not being able to put the rig down anywhere except the supplied stand. When guaging pain tolerance for that run you're about to make, be sure to factor in the trip back to the stand as well *ugh*. Great piece of kit otherwise. Easy to put together, great battery life (2 could last you a day before you pass out from exhaustion). Hmmm.. maybe I shouldn't have had a NinjaStar and 7" monitor on the top bars... Thin, light cables help if running any to the camera.

I totally agree with the others who mentioned that being able to put the thing down should be a consideration. OR you could make life real easy with belt, straps and a 4th axis stabilizer like this: http://www.turboace.com/jockeymotion4-axis.aspx Of course an EasyRig would work too and then you'd really impress the girls...

I've been trying to get my raven flying on the ronin m the last couple of hours but it just wont fit.
I have the I/O expander han the red to d-tap cable is in the way for tilting.. aaaand the stiff red monitor cable is pushing the ronin out of balance. Any ideas?

I use the ronin power distributor, extended rods and the RED 4,7 monitor and sigma 24-70 2.8

Same problem! You need those braided cables from woodencamera or RED! But still it's kinda impossible to fit a RAVEN with a sigma 18-35 art! I'm now using a canon 24 STM. :(

Its not the art version :) but i kinda got it to work! Just cant tilt down, but thats fine for now

With Ronin M you need to spend ALOT more money to get all the needed weights, base plate, batteries, battery power cables etc etc. I used to own the M and used with my Raven and with a Sigma 18-35 it crapped out way too many times on set, which ain't really heavy lens, so I sold it, and now the Gravity is just a beast. Ronin-M is NOT made for RED setups. Works flawlessly with A7s, DSLRs. But always being close to that 8lb limit is bad for the motors and when on a professional set, any issues are not acceptable. Not to mention shooting in LA Summer. The trouble you'll face is when you need to use heavy lens, FF, mattebox - you simply can't. It's way too limiting. DJI need to release the Ronin 2.

try a ronin-mx, I've got both the ronin-m and a ronin and you really need a wireless focus system if you want to use the raven with cinematic purposes. They are both great, the original Ronin doesn't feel old tech after using the ronin-m.
