  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raven + DJI M600 + DJI Focus + Sigma 18-35 = dream aerial setup

Wise setup

We absolutely support that on Canon Cameras with Canon power EF zooms so as soon as RED enables that feature we are ready ;-)

Jacek - you know I love the Optitron. It's an amazing piece of engineering and if Foolcontrol hasn't happened - I would have gotten couple already. I was merely pointing out that we predominately use the DJI Focus to actually zoom, as focus on aerials is almost always fixed (unless we are doing close proximity stuff - in which case it's easy to move it over to the focus ring). The only motorized EF zooms I have seen all use proprietary external motor that still adds some weight. I wish the DJI Focus would support 2 (or even 3) channels, but I am not complaining at this price level. The DJI Focus beats other products in its price range heads down and works and feels like products 10x more expensive. The ability to zoom during aerial work is amazing. You can see in the pic that it is positioned on the zoom ring of the 18-35...

thanx - but inspire has lb1 ... u can not send a second video feed. lightbridge2 is supposed to send two video feeds parallel so you
can have a dedicated pilot camera ... just wondering

Hey Flo! Yes, the LB1 on the Inspire is the single most important issue that lets it down. If it wasn't for the X5 - I would prefer to use the Phantom any day. The LB2 on the M600 is rock solid and does work with two camera inputs, so you can have your FPV reference for the pilot. Having said that - I rarely take my eyes off of the M600. As a pilot I prefer LOS at all times...

Since you've used the SRW-60 but it can also do mini hdmi/sdi to lb2, I was wondering, is there any noticeable lag doing that?

So mHDMI/SDI to LB2 to iPad on ground?

Also do you know if the MX is still set to be released this week? :p

Someone tested their M600 and they said 14lbs was stable. Have you tried anything more than the advertised amount?

Thanks for the great info Peter. A couple more questions:

What kind of flight times are you getting with that configuration? What is total loaded weight of that setup and does the aircraft seem decently powered for that weight?

How is the Ronin MX handling the weight at higher speeds? Any drift or stability issues in the image when flying faster? (an issue with the Freefly gimbals)

What is your plan for keeping all the batts charged? How long are you finding to charge all six?

Raven ready to do what she was made for - take her maiden flight. This combo is like a dream come true for someone like me. It was a long wait to get here - but it was worth it. Being able to shoot 4.5K RAW @ 120 FPS at this price level is still hard to comprehend. They way RED and DJI has revolutionised filmmaking is one of the most under-appreciated thing of the last 8 years. Now Sigma has "grown up" and joined the team. Only a year ago I would be looking at $150K+ setup to be able to do this. Five years ago I would need $1 million plus. Today I can do this for under $25K. Still pinching myself every morning...

Stay tuned for some detailed feedback on both the Raven and the M600, lots of footage and ton of BTS. If you have any special request you would like me to test / try - don't be shy. I'll do my best...

To all those still waiting for theirs - I know your pain and I know there is nothing I can say to make it easier. The only thing I can say is that once you get yours - you will instantly forget all the pain...

Awesome! Thanks for sharing. I've got an Alta/Movi combo waiting for a Scarlet-W.. somehow the Canon C100 on there now just doesn't do it justice. I've been following the M600 closely though.. would be awesome to have some of the simplicity and system integration of my Inspire/X5 with the bigger rig. Alta flies so damn smooth though, makes Inspire seem really aggressively twitchy and robotic. How does the M600 feel compared to Inspire?

Where's the footage at?

How can we get the SRW 60 in the US? Maybe someone out of the US make a small profit by shipping them here?

I've owned and flied many various multicopters and most problems were with DJI's big birds like S800 and S900. They are very well designed but final products have problems with vibrations caused with weak arms, thin plates, foldable propellers...
Looking at M600 I'm afraid there will be also problems with possibly weak arms and thin top and bottom plates which need to support very heavy payload. For such heavy and expensive payloads I prefer 8 motors for more redundancy.

Biggest problem I see with M600 is 6 batteries for single flight. Just imagine how much lipos sets is needed for full day job, how many chargers...
One TB48D lipo is $200 so $1200 for one set! Let's say that 5 sets is minimum for daily work and that's $6000 on the $4600 for M600.
I have no idea what time is needed to charge one set of 6 lipos for M600? 5-6 hours?

Yeah, those batteries are a big red flag for me too. DJI's smart batteries are really cool in concept, essentially built-in charger & discharger, history available via the app, flight time remaining via app, etc. But, I've been using an Inspire for my work since it first shipped (only took DJI a few months to actually ship, what's up Red Scarlet-W?) and 2 of my 6 batteries have been killed by firmware updates. Each one has to have its firmware updated regularly, along with the radios and drone, so it's a tedious process, and twice batteries have stopped working following the process. Then, it's an encounter with DJI's customer service, which is convoluted and atrocious. They replaced 1 pack (along with a bum radio) after a few weeks of back and forth, but sent a repair bill for more than the cost of a new pack for the second (after a few weeks of back and forth).

If my experience is any example, it'd be a 33% failure rate in under a year for all those batteries, and dozens of them would be slowly charging pretty much all the time. Cool they're small enough to travel with on commercial flights, and the other features are cool. It's daunting, though, to think of keeping it running for a long shoot day like we do with our Alta and its old school Lipos now.

Wow, that's a very sexy setup !!! Can't wait for your feedbacks ;)

Do you have any difficuties with the local flying regulations?

With no feedback or footage we can only assume a serious crash with fatalities has occurred.

You guys crack me up. I guess for some the glass is always half empty... ;o)

Both M600 & the Raven are doing just fine. The combination of my work (setting up new R&D facility in another prefecture while still having to run our film division) and weather only leaves me with a day at the most each week to "play". And with only two sets of batteries (for now) - we simply don't have enough stuff to start sharing yet. Please be patient...

Be careful with your flight test, looks like the flip of death is back. Probably a good idea to film each flight with a go pro or something. At Cinegear I heard about several M600's going in.

I have done a few test flights with my M600 with no problems. I see he is on a android in that video and I use IOS.

Since the user has to assemble in on arrival there its room for error but that crash does looks really strange.

I am still waiting for my Ronin MX to show up. Anyone received there yet? Thanks,

I ordred mine a few weeks ago, are they shipping yet?

Man I watch your video and it just makes me nervous. There's Nothing wrong with what your doing, well except putting a $15k+ camera package up hundreds of feet in the air haha, but I just can't get around the lack of trust I have in every part of a drone possibly failing. Call me paranoid, but I just realized I have Drone anxiety. :emote_22_yikes:

Peter, any thoughts now that it's been in your hands for over two months? The MX+600 might be on my horizon and I'm super eager to hear thoughts! Thanks
