Raven ready to do what she was made for - take her maiden flight. This combo is like a dream come true for someone like me. It was a long wait to get here - but it was worth it. Being able to shoot 4.5K RAW @ 120 FPS at this price level is still hard to comprehend. They way RED and DJI has revolutionised filmmaking is one of the most under-appreciated thing of the last 8 years. Now Sigma has "grown up" and joined the team. Only a year ago I would be looking at $150K+ setup to be able to do this. Five years ago I would need $1 million plus. Today I can do this for under $25K. Still pinching myself every morning...

Stay tuned for some detailed feedback on both the Raven and the M600, lots of footage and ton of BTS. If you have any special request you would like me to test / try - don't be shy. I'll do my best...

To all those still waiting for theirs - I know your pain and I know there is nothing I can say to make it easier. The only thing I can say is that once you get yours - you will instantly forget all the pain...

Damn that's sexy! Ha! So legit!!! Ohh those images are going to be magical...

That looks really good... I am extremely tempted to go this route as well. I just flew my Weapon for the first time on my Cinestar 8 HL, it flew our scarlet quite a bit and is a solid copter. But... The single downlink and simplicity of the M600/MX kit seems like a total game changer.

Peter. Would you say the new Ronin MX is a worthy upgrade (vs the Ronin-M) for using with Raven? That is, if you're not planning on flying it on a Multirotor. I know of the improved features and weight capacity. Does it seem that much smoother to justify for just ground work if you don't need all the other features.

Great setup you have. Looking forward to your review!

Would love your input on this as well Peter.

AWESOME! So stoked for you! I almost bought a Raven just for drone use as I was wary of putting my S-W in the air, lol. Please comment on the following:

1) How are you getting wireless video signal?
2) How are you adjusting camera settings in the air?
3) What are you using to pull focus? DJI follow focus?
4) How are you powering the camera?

My apologies if the questions seem very basic, I'm only familiar with flying smaller drones like the Inspire 1. I've wanted to step up and fly my RED, though just the overall confusion and complication of setting a drone up for it has kept me away. Would love to know how "easy" it is for this setup to work. Thanks!

This is a dream:) nice setup Peter.
Just one question, How many meter dji follow work in your setup? 100 meters or about 3.5km ?

thanks

You could shave the weight of the motor with Optitron setup...
Of course we make it ;-)

Just from looking at his image. It appears he is powering the Ronin-MX from the small DJI battery in the front. It sits right above the camera on the counterbalance horizontal arm. The camera is powered by the the larger DJI 4S 4350 mAh battery on the usual mounting location with the new accessories including DJI Lemo to p tap cable. They sell that now with an adapter plate to power your camera. It's very nice. I would assume he's using DJI follow focus and light bridge 2 for up to 3.1 miles of range stated by their specs. Which is pretty incredible at this price point. Peter can correct me if I'm wrong.

thanx ! are you using a second pilot camera through lightbridge2 or know if its easy possible?

We are using both single-op and dual-op setups. Works exactly as Inspire in that regards - except this is on LightBridge 2 - so better signal and much longer range. So far the furthest we have tried is 1.7 km...

But... The single downlink and simplicity of the M600/MX kit seems like a total game changer.

That is exactly what did it for me. In many ways I am little concerned as this setup is as easy to use as Phantom / Inspire and I can see lot of folks taking this to the sky without adequate experience... ;o)

Kevin & Mike, the biggest change for me aside of the aerial integration is the ability to power your RED using standard Ronin batteries. This alone IMHO is worth the upgrade. The solid camera "cage" that grips the camera from both top and bottom eliminates the binding of the tilt axis and far more solid results. It does complicate the balancing a bit, but its worth it...

Q1) How are you getting wireless video signal?
A1) RED's HDMI feeds the SRW-60 that transmits uncompressed HD wirelessly to the receiver on the M600. This is then fed into the LightBridge 2, so the video from the RED appears inside the DJI GO app, just as it would on Phantom / Inspire. This is my fav feature...

Q2) How are you adjusting camera settings in the air?
A2) For now we can trigger REC via the DJI GO app. More features/control will become available later...

Q3) What are you using to pull focus? DJI follow focus?
A3) Yes, we are using the DJI Focus. But for our aerial needs I actually prefer to use it to zoom. We can easily switch it to focus if needed, but can't do both at the same time...

Q4) How are you powering the camera?
A4) From the (large) Ronin battery that mounts on the back of the R-MX (more about this in my review). One battery usually lasts 2 flights, but we make it a habit to change it after each flight. They recharge (top up) fast...

This is actually my worry, as you can see in my reply to Philip. This combo makes things seems almost too easy. Do not forget what you are flying - and I am not talking just about the value. Crashing one of these into something (or forbid someone) can cause some serious damage / injury...

Thanks for the replies. Make no mistake about it, there will be a ton of these crashed due to the price of entry. Hopefully the cost of the camera people are flying will inhibit recklessness. These larger rigs almost require bigger crew which can help reduce any mistakes and mishaps. I was overly cautious flying my phantom years ago and I'm sure I'll be several times more cautious with the M600 over the inspire. Looking forward to reading more of your journey!

Unless the Optitron can zoom EF lenses, I think I will stick with the motor... ;o)

:sifone: Peter
We absolutely support that on Canon Cameras with Canon power EF zooms so as soon as RED enables that feature we are ready ;-)
