Hello All !

I've to admit that I started to use my Raven using the classic Canon EF 50mm F/1.4 (my first full frame lens on Canon DLSR too, some years ago...) taking into account its aperture and its size/weight. But I figured that the lack of precision and sharpness is clear, and I forgive it for its price. So, I'm currently taking a look to a new 50mm lens, it's quite a vast choice !

I'll be interested by any return on experience or remark about those lenses (or other 50s), I'll add the budget factor later:

Carl Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZE Canon

ZEISS Compact Prime CP.2 50mm/T2.1 Cine Lens

Canon EF CN-E 50mm T1.3

Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM

Sigma 50mm T1.5 FF

Samyang 50mm T1.5 AS UMC VDSLR

Xeen 50 mm T1.5

Thanks by advance !

I use a Zeiss Milvus 50mm and I love the look of it. You seem to have a wide range of budget options there so i thought I'd throw this one in.
I would look into the Otus 55mm also. It's almost perfect in terms of image quality. It's very precise and sharp.

Thanks for your help Adam !

Read some reviews on the Rokinon / Samyang 50 1.2 SP. The SP (special performance) line from them seems to be a lot of bang for buck. I haven’t gotten it yet for my Raven but it’s my top choice at the moment.

Actually from my understanding, the Rokinon DS are not the same optics as the newer SP line. It's nice that the DS are designed for cinema use but from what I've read the SP line are much improved optics, and still have very nice manual focus. They kinda look like the Zeiss Milvus/Otus lines. I think the confusion can come from whether you have Samyang or Rokinon branding in your country. Rokinon has the SP designation while Samyang uses XP.

Thanks all for your answers !

I didn't know either the Rokinon SP series, I didn't found any Cine version for the moment but this could be very interesting even in this configuration.

I've got a Contax Zeiss 50/1.4 AEJ and I love it. It's light years beyond the Canon 50/1.4 and it's better than my Nikon 50/1.4 too. It seems to have a slight bit more warmth than the ZE versions, though I've heard they're similar optically, especially in the newer MM versions. There's a great thread about it here. If you get an AE version they generally flare a neutral white versus the purple ZE's tend toward—which I find more pleasing. I think newer coatings cause that purple, and I'm not sure why they went that route. I'm not sure if Milvus does that but you might want to look into that depending upon what you shoot, your style, and preference.

As for Contax, I also have the 85 MMJ and 35 AEG, which I'd also recommend if you're looking to build a set. I've used a CN-E set on my Raven, which was nice, but they're pretty warm from what I remember. I think they might've been even warmer than my vintage Nikon set, but I didn't compare them directly.

No problem! Let us know if you try one out and how you like it.

How about this one?

Whow thanks Misha and Darren, I didn't know those ones ! Actually, even if my question was about 50s on Ravens, it would be interesting to put it on Lens Tests forum.

Thanks all for your help, I'll have a look on this interesting brand.

I have a Contax Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 MMJ. I can't recommend it highly enough for the price. It makes faces look lovely.

I didn't know this Zeiss, it looks interesting given this price !

"Almost" off topic, has someone already tried the GDU 40mm ? It's not a 50, not a wide aperture, but looks interesting on a gimbal with this weight...

Thanks by advance !

I currently have the Canon Cine line up and use my 50mm Cine often - no complaints....

Hello Ron, thanks for your feedback. I've saw once a Cine 50 on a 1DC, and the owner spoke very highly about it too !
