Have Raven. From C100/DSLR guy, a new world. Loving it, learning it.

Anyone have experience with Raven (or RED) and new Atomos Shogun Flame 7" monitor?

I'll still use internal R3D for 4K. But for long form I'm thinking of recording external HD Prores and pretty sure something like this Shogun can do it via SDI? Also, I like idea of using 7" monitor for nailing focus -- just one of many areas I'm struggling to perfect with Raven.

It's pricey at $1,695 (US). Wanted to see if any feedback or suggestions before taking plunge.

The Shogun series are great, but not robust. The glass they used is one of the more brittle ones that I've worked with so you'll definitely want to be extra careful with it and get the rubber case for around the edges.

The clarity on it is fabulous and works extremely well for nailing focus. I leave mine on my A7Sii all the time and occasionally use it on my Dragon for long takes.

I like the ability to use LUTs with the Shogun monitors, just keep in mind that it'll add an extra battery to you kit unless you run a D-Tap or LEMO from the V-Lock to the screen.

I recently purchased the Shogun Flame specifically for HDR monitoring with the Weapon. Even for non HDR, it is insanely bright, which is great for outdoor use.

It is less expensive than Red's 7" display. The Red 7" is lighter and can be cable-less for video and power.

To power the Shogun you can use batteries or a cable to go from your battery plate (D-Tap). It comes in a nice yellow hard case with a charger, two batteries, a sun shade, four hard drove cases and a USB reader. It is a nice package. It supports loading several 3D LUTs.

My co-worker / business partner has a GH4 and we will use the Shogun to record 10-bit 4:2:2 UHD from the GH4 for BTS.

If I could only purchase one, I would get the Red since I like it being able to control the camera via touch, cable-less and lighter.

Also check out the PIX line of monitors. I use it on one of my GH4s -- gorilla glass, touch controls, physical button/knob controls, various prores flavors. I've used Atomos products extensively and none have lasted through the field (in day-in day-out production use) without serious extra protection. The PIX E5 has been in my kit since November and I've not had a single issue with it. http://www.videodevices.com/products/portable-video-recorders

If you're looking for just a monitor, SmallHD always has top of the line stuff.

Quick tip, you can nail focus on a solid 5" monitor no problem as long as it's resolution is up to snuff. I prefer a 5" onboard to a 7" in most situations that are not studio.

Thanks guys! I have a Ninja Blade that's performed well with my C100. Going to check out the PIX monitors, looks like good option, though I do wonder if 1500 nits of new Atomos line will be more helpful here in Northern California with that SUN.

Ultimately I guess I should practice more with Raven & RED 5" monitor. Especially focus. Like a lot of you I prefer cable-less combo, makes for ease of handling, more compact package. Great stuff for a run-and-gunner like me.
