  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raven at Apple, In stock

God I can't wait to see what the bigger reason behind all of this is. Need popcorn

Jarred replied this to a person in his post's comment section, "Ivalio you are not completely wrong but this has nothing to do with Hydrogen. Apple gets Raven only because of their new investment into their Mac pro hardware program. That was the deal. Sometimes you gotta take one for the team to push for a much bigger cause. I hope everyone can read between those lines and congratulate apple for putting some skin back in the game that so many assumed they just abandoned."

So at least for now, and maybe going forward, the deal between RED and Apple is solely for the Mac Pro-line.

It seems possible that RED is playing a bigger part in the design of the new Mac Pro than we realize. RED may be helping Apple not only with workflow and software, but with the modular design concept that has helped make RED what they are today.
Combine different core modules for different markets and usage utilizing a high speed data bus co-developed along side the data bus being used by Hydrogen One. Buy a Mac Pro base module (still a stand alone machine itself), then add GPU, storage, expansion ports, etc. Just a thought...

I really doubt that's something Apple would need help with, they've got a much bigger and more experienced industrial design team than RED. But, it does speak to the fact that having a Mac ecosystem that exists is something that matters to RED a lot, not everyone wants to go to Windows out of necessity.

Whatever the contractual arrangements might be, I know there are people inside Apple who spend time on movie sets and I am sure they have plenty of encounters with, and gather knowledge of, RED cameras and interact with RED employees and RED users. The more "formal" connection between the two companies implies to me that they will spend more time talking and sharing ideas that can serve to inform the design of the Apple hardware/software landscape as it relates to shooting and post. This is a great thing.

I really love my mac pro's, but have been forced to slowly move away from them. I really appreciate the effort that RED has been doing, first to explode the distribution channel into Apple(this totally blows my mind having red in the apple store), second how they are working with apple to make a computer that we can process RED footage on. I btw think Apple has some hugely smart guys working on the computer, but having a few "friendly" use case experts like RED is a huge advantage so they produce gear that is top tier.

Maybe in the not to distant future, Apple will acquire RED and start a studio to create content for their entertainment platform a la Netflix

I don't think Jim would want to sell RED after what happened to Oakley and Apple doesn't buy companies, so much as buy their tech/patents and show most of the employees the door. That would be sort of thing that would kill the RED brand, not to mention break Jim's heart. He's already been through that with Oakley and he doesn't need to see his hard work and passion turned into another historical footnote. I'd rather see RED remain independent and privately owned by Jim Jannard, managed by Jarred Land, and fueled by creative genius and mad science-types.

Wow. I didn't see this one coming. As a Mac user, I'm very happy about this collaboration

My hope is that I can buy just a Raven brain at the Apple Store as a back up to my Helium. I don't need the full Raven kit as I already have the accessories for my Helium. It would also be nice to have a less expensive brain while traveling in sketchy areas.

I Believe they will only have the Kits, No accessories or individual brains as of now. If you need a Raven let me know, I have some in stock here in Seattle.

the defiant ones, I could totally see apple buying red; however I echo your last statement

Personally, I don't think Apple buying RED would necessarily be a bad thing insofar as I think any such transaction would come with RED's management autonomy very clearly spelled out (assuming they wanted to remain in control). But, I really don't see it happening. If you ask me, the existence of a strong relationship between the two independent companies benefits them both whereas an ownership situation would negate some of the benefits.

Worth noting that I can't think of a situation is Apple history where they let a brand stay separate except, somewhat oddly (IMO), FileMaker.

...they've got a much bigger and more experienced industrial design team than RED...

This may be true, but every company still hires outside consultants at times.
Also, if you still believe that a company like Apple does not need help... you have to ask yourself what went wrong with the Trash Can??? Why didn't this "bigger and more experienced industrial design team" at least advise against it???

...Apple doesn't buy companies...

What happens with Raven ownership transfers now? Warranty / repair still direct through RED?

I believe the Apple web site states that all service and warranty issues are still handled through RED so nothing on that front will change.

My guess is Apple will end up buying RED.
