Everyone I talk to, every forum, Everyone is talking about the Raven and Scarlet W. It Seems Red lost the Prores battle after all, but the geniuses at Red turned it into their biggest advantage. Releasing the Raven and Scarlet W, has triggered indie filmmakers, documentary filmmakers, ENg, Music video producers, extreme sports videographers, viral video makers, indie Rental houses, and the lot, to begin saving their pennies. The Raven will be backordered for months on end. Whats not to like, 4.5 14-16 stops (depending on who is counting, Prores 2k 4:22, light weight, great color science, choice of OLPf's, booming third party accessories market, essentially everything thing the The Ursa Mini 4.6k was to be will be in the Raven. As a matter of fact is the Red Weapon and Scarlet Weapon were announced after the Ravens shipped this year, every pro would have bought a Raven. All the Redusers who were said to have jumped ship, would kicking themselves.

I am one of those guys.
I wa looking to replace my DSLR kit entirely but was not satisfied with what was out there. My first choice was the Canon C-300 Mk2, but out of my price range. So I was ready to settle for a C-300 mk1 when while browsing I stumbled, literally stumbled upon the Raven. And that was it. I am now in the queue. I have been spending my time learning about the Red ecosystem since.
In the future, my Raven will become my B cam and the Scarlett - W my main camera. I am committed to Red as long as it stays in this "lower" economic bracket.
The caliber of this camera is way above what I could hope to get.
I am mainly shooting my own docu films. But who knows what kind of doors this camera will open for me.

It also does not hurt that Netflix & Amazon have re-ignited independent filmmaking in a major way and also helped fuel the rise of higher-end, cinematic episodic series.

Scarlet-W is PERFECT for shooting high-end episodic.

I look at 8K Weapon as the "cinema" camera. Scarlet-W as the "episodic" camera. Raven as the "doc / drone / eng / sports / skater dudes" camera. Of course, all of these cameras work across the entire range of content - but ... Scarlet-W is just the perfect storm. Weapon 8K is the beast for the big screen and fashion/advertising.

funny thing is in the tv world and even commercials ive been bosting about the raven im getting and every producer is like, 4k is more then enough, why 5k?
( i do shoot it for green screen occasionally, but the few times i did on a commercial, post and producers pounced on me for overkill)
then asked how much for my raven when i get it, and when i say $1000 a day, not even a blink of an eye they say, nice!
of course thats with support. so il make my money back in a few months.
so i dont totally agree that its just for doc, and skater kids, it depends who's hands its in.
if i had pl mount glass i might go for scarlet, but to make things happen, raven is perfect.

Raven gonna get a lot of play for sure. That Carrion Video they put out made a o lot of noise..hope the first footage from the Scarlet-W makes a big splash as well... While it makes me nervous thinking that the Scarlet-w or weapon MG might get passed up in some cases, a lot of the projects that come around need PL mounts for that Anamorphic Life

I also jump ship from GH4 looking for better in all areas and I do believe that the Raven was a good choice to start the Red ecosystem. As for me this will be my main camera but for freelance work I would love to B-Cam for anyone looking.

Simply put the raven is a winner, the clear definition of a game changer. The original Scarlett's were not that great, Prores 2k 4:22 HQ from a 4.5k source is all you will need for many kinds of projects. Hopefully Red won't think too much about upgrading the firmware in the future to 4:4:4:4.

The thing with RAVEN that stands out for me is the price/performance ratio. Having started on the RED One with a base price of $17,500 and seeing the RAVEN being priced at ~ $6,000 (brain) with very much improved performance just makes a Moore's Law World seem more in tune. The Weapon appeared to upset this World view but when you include the 8k capability, even that camera price seems more understandable.

Honestly, I think if you need everything that ProRes 4x4 offers, you could just use the R3Ds to transcode to that. While waiting, you can do everything you need quickly with the internal ProRes. More is always better but I just don't think you'll see 4x4 out of a Scarlet-W or Raven since their internal boards are probably just not up to the task.

Honestly, it doesn't take much to create Prores, weak Blackmagic products produce Prores 4:4:4:4, Red has taken the prodicy differentiation route to keep the higher Bitrates and resolutions for the top tier products. Prores conversion happens on a small chip. As a matter of fact Red's technology has been in existence for over 5 years.

Awesome to see the excitement of this thread, excitement I'm living with daily. And when NAB 2016 comes around the possibilities of what to use on our DSMC2s will have us excited all over again!

As a person who started way outside the possibilities of having a RED, it's cool that your not just getting a tool to help you craft images, you're getting a community with that. One of the best parts..
