  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raven accessories HELP NEEDED

Well, the Ronin-M and mine (AllSteady6) can both handle up to 8Lbs and they cost the same.
The Ronin-M however doesn't have a control joystick built in, like the AllSteady.

If i have to spend $1400 on the Ronin-M plus a hundred $ for the PRO Dovetail excluding the counterweight, isn't that waste of money when i just bought a gimbal (AllSteady6)?

Like i said, the camera plus modules will weigh 6.64 pounds and my heaviest lens is 1.48 pounds. That's only 0.12Lbs over 8 pounds if i use that heavy lens.
So i should be covered with my current gimbal.
Also they might offer a counter weigh solution too, like DJI does ;)

But thank you for your concern.

Hi guys, im new to this forum and new to Red cameras.

Finally im converting my setup from dslr 5DIII to Red, and the Raven is going to be my first

I don't have any experience with Red, therefor i'm asking for some guidance to pick up the right gear for the camera.

I need a small setup for my tripod, gimbal (AllSteady6) and 15mm rig.
How little Red accessories can i get away with? i don't have much money, so i would only like to purchase the necessary gear to have my Raven up & runnin.

Here's what i'm thinking of buying, please let me know if i should get anything else or different/less expensive.

1. Raven camera
2. Red 4.7" touch LCD > http://www.red.com/store/products/dsmc2-red-touch-47inch-lcd/730-0019
3. Red Station Mini Mag > http://www.red.com/store/products/red-station-mini-mag/750-0055
4. Red Brick Power Pack > http://www.red.com/store/products/red-brick-power-package-dsmc/740-0035
5. Red Mini Mag SSD 250GB > http://www.red.com/store/products/red-mini-mag/750-0082
6. Top Handle 100mm > http://www.ebay.com/itm/SmallRig-QR...m-Nato-Safety-Rail-For-Red-Epic-/251824265860
7. Cable-less V-Mount > http://woodencamera.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=1276
8. Pogo extender for LCD with gimbal > http://woodencamera.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=1294

Is there anything else that i need to get the camera in use?
And is it okay to buy the "Cable-less V-Mount" from woodencamera instead of the "DSMC2 V-LOCK I/O EXPANDER" ($1.900) from Red's website.
i don't think im gonna need any of the connection it offers... or do i?

Any guidance is much appreciated

Thanks guys!

No one has mentioned this, but don't you need the I/O V-lock to provide SDI connectivity for the monitor?

I think the new DSMC2 camera's and LCD's are with pogo connectors.

Yes that Wooden Camera pogo to pogo is a must for gimbal work. I got the 24"

Cause they're cheap as hell..hahahaha
have you seen their prices, i mean omg!!

$850 for 120gb SSD, are you kidding me?!!
It's not even as fast as Samsung Evo 850 drives, which costs a fraction

It's all a spoof..

SSD technology is not new or expensive anymore.
Sony & Red are ripping us off!

However, i AM impressed by the 5.5Gbps speed, but "high frame recording up to 4K"...? hahaha

True true :Angel_anim:

Now this Panasonic is more like me.. great stuff

Hahaha yeah, a board for us broke-asses :001_cool:

$17k-27k for a varicam camera body is for broke people?

this is a raven thread, you can could have got a whole package for $10k had you jumped on-board early, its what about $12k now?

hehe sorry i don't know how i misread that board :/ im sleepy i guess.

Well, i just heard about the Raven a couple of weeks before making this thread.
Besides, im still saving up 14 grand for the whole thing.

But i think they upgraded it from 4K to 4.5K since the launch.. and raised the price!
Or am i mistaking?!

price stayed the same when the jump to 4.5k was announced. they said they did this "because we can". I believe the price jumped slightly after January.
Welcome to the boards. but best to homework. I read a lot about how expensive red meida is.. doesn't seem so expensive when you start looking at other professional camera equipment

I understand what you mean but just wait, you will see what I am saying ;)

Luckily my Gimbal can handle up to 8lbs.
All the gear (Raven, SSD, RedBrick, V-Mount) weighs 6.64Lbs. LCD is moved from camera to top of gimbal.

My heaviest lens is 1.48 Lbs. So i can almost make it work ;)

Thank you very much for all your advice. I'm definitely gonna get the 7inch LCD.

I can get a Battery belt option http://www.red.com/store/products/battery-belt-clip-dsmc
and move the battery away from the camera when using a gimbal.
But then i need to spend money on a V-Lock I/O Expander ($1900) or Base Expander ($1.750).

But it suck that you cannot turn ON a Red camera with included AC power supply, when bought as is :(
You are forced to buy either the:
DSMC2 V-LOCK I/O EXPANDER = $1900 (for battery & AC Power)
REDVOLT XL MODULE = $1.150 (for battery & AC Power)

and these modules needs battery and cannot use the camera's AC Power
:
MODULE ADAPTOR W/ QUICKPLATE PACK = $1.075
DSMC2 V-LOCK BATTERY MODULE = $600

And this needs a modules that has a power input:
BATTERY BELT CLIP = $325

I cannot believe that we have to spend extra money on modules, just to power up the camera

Am i right?

Yeah, but the price of being modular is payed by us.
